Come back British Rail, all is forgiven Kate On Saturday we decided it was time for another day trip. We leave Madrid at the end of June, which isn't very long now. We want to see more of the surrounding area before we go. We decided on an afternoon visit to the town of El Escorial and its monastery complex. It's about 50km North of Madrid, near the mountains. We saw there were regular trains from Atocha, the main Madrid train station, which also happens to be close to our flat. So off we went to the station to catch a train. Simple we though. Oh how wrong we were. We got to the station and followed the signs in Spanish for the ticket office. Inside the ticket office it was chaos, there were people ... read more

Valle de los Caidos translates to the Valley of the Fallen. It was conceived by the Spanish dictator Francisco Franco to honor those who died during the Spanish Civil War and as a national act of atonement. Over 2,000 bodies are buried in a tomb in the church. The church was very beautiful since it was carved out of a mountain and overlooks El Escorial and the suburbs of Madrid. El Escorial was built to serve as a royal monastery and summer retreat for the Spanish monarchy. Most of the Spanish monarchy included King Phillip II and Queen Isabella are buried in the castle.... read more

Ok. So when we left Madrid after like 2 hours of sleep, we took about an hour bus ride to a little town outside of Madrid, called El Escorial. It was crazy beautiful and a tiny little community in the mountains. Here is some info about it: El Escorial, the Royal Monastery of San Lorenzo El Real (also known as the Monasterio de El Escorial or simply El Escorial) is located about 45 km (28 mi) northwest of the Spanish capital, Madrid. El Escorial comprises two architectural complexes of great historical and cultural significance: El Real Monasterio de El Escorial itself and La Granjilla de La Fresneda, a royal hunting lodge and monastic retreat about five km away. These sites have a dual nature; that is to say, during the 16th and 17th centuries, they were ... read more

Apologies - currently unable to restore. If you have a backup please edit this entry and save/publishI´m in Madrid visiting Beltran, Eduardo and their families. Beltran and I went to the Valle do los Caidos, Valley of the Fallen. Its an amazing place and has two very different stories to it and history hasn´t decided yet which will endure. FAUST / old ways After Franco won the civil war in 1939, he "hired" the losing side, the Republic, paid each person one pesta a day to carve a church in to the side of a mountain, all solid stone. The "employees" worked 10 hour day six days a week for 18 years to complete the project. Inside the church the shape is like one long arch, 50 feet high 400 feet long, to support all the ... read more

Wow. 2 weeks have already gone by and it's already FEBRERO!!! Well this past weekend we took an excursion to El Escorial, a 16th Century monastary that was comissioned and home to King Felipe II. It was really cold, considering at the time it was built they didn't believe in heating...or it was yet to be invented. The "chapel" was incredible, the "retablo" or the pictures were amazing and it was cool to see a Greico painting in one of the back rooms that we just learned about in class. The residence of the King and his daughter were still in the same condition, and we saw the king's bed where he died. But that's not all...we went to the mortuary, very depressing, and morbid, but interesting, they have all the caskets of the kings and ... read more

So first week of classes are over and I think I've chosen Anthro and Fascism and there is no possibility of the drawing because of blah, blah, blah bs. So yeah, although the classes are going to be work, I think I'll enjoy them. So today NYU took us on an hour ride out to El Escorial. It was a nice little town with a huge monastery. It was the dwelling of Felipe II. We spent 3 hours touring this place. The pictures didn't turn out that great but you can look through them to see what I did.... read more

Today we went to El Escorial! It is a monestary, a school, a castle, a city, a library and the official burying place of all the kings and queens of Spain, dating back to the 16th Century. They actually don't get buried, they are all in these masoleum type deals. The castle's architecture was awesome, but the one thing that interested me the most were the frescos, the painted ceilings. They were exceptionally impressive in the church and library. The city is about a half hour out Madrid. For lunch I had el menu del dia, where I chose judias verdes, green beans prepared with olive oil, a very similar dish to what Grandpa Bart and Grandma Stella make, so you know it has to be good. For my second course i had tortilla de benito, ... read more
