Gotta love the quads. Dependable.

The mind. Less so.

Just spent 2 days covering about 100kms through fields of maize, sunflowers, farms and volcanic plains.

That and some serious hills! I have named my bike Sant Jordi - after the patron saint of Catalonia (better known as Saint George). As I reached the hills I would say, 'Take me up Sant Jordi!'

When mind and quads were in unison we were invincible but a couple of times, especially in the full sun I lost it! 27.5 C up a steep incline just didn’t work. Couldn't always slay that dragon!

But the pleasure of freewheeling for over a kilometre downhill with the wind in your hair made the effort well worth it. We then made our way down through the Garrotxa Volcanic Zone Natural Park through forests of beech trees that provided the most extraordinary dappled light!

Today we reached Olot in time for ‘menu del dia’, siesta and then into town where there was a major festival in full swing. Drumming bands in colored uniforms parading up the alleyways, rock bands doing prolonged sound checking (Uno, Dos; Uno, Dos!) and kids gathering confetti off the street to throw at each other – again!

Tomorrow is our final ride 59km back to Girona. We have learned to start early, get some kilometres under our belts before a stop at 11.30 a.m. when the little village cafes open for café solo.

It has been a challenge but well worthwhile. The stepper machine at gym was good preparation for both the quads and the mind!

From here Dali country calls - off to Cadaques for a few days of Catalan hippie heaven.

Bon Dia!
