Barcelona is AWESOME!!! We arrived in this amazing city on the 5th of July by plane and actually made our way to the hotel without getting lost for once. Although it did take about half an hour for the train to actually arrive and then another hour or so to get to the hostel but we did it easily. We checked in at around 2pm and were greeted by Tina, the owner of the hostel. She was so helpful and drew out a little map of Barcelona and the places that we should see. Proudly we managed to do all of them!!! But after our check in, we headed down the road for some lunch before the beach. Adonis cafe is a very tourist friendly restaurant and the people are great as well as the food. We then headed down to the beach and although it was nearly 5:30, the sun was still high in the sky so we were able to make a pretty good afternoon at the beach. We then walked all the way back to our hostel which took around 45 minutes.
The next morning we did Skype with Tonez and Kylie and then had a quick
bite to eat before doing another round of Skype to see Chris and the family for his 18th Birthday. After our videochat, we walked all the way down our street which was nearly a half an hour walk and had lunch at a "restaurant". Sarah got a crappy burnt Paella and I got a frozen pizza out of a box reheated. Not impressed. After digesting the lump of coal in our stomachs, we headed towards the Picasso museum and saw some of the shops along the way. The shops were really worthwhile as it had something for everyone. We didn't end up seeing the museum as we had seen Picasso's work before in another museum and the line was too long. We then headed back to Cafe Adonis again as it was getting close to dinner time. I finally managed to get a steak that was actually cooked medium well instead of the hardly cooked or leather boot varieties that I only seem to find over here!
Our 2nd morning, we got up early and headed towards the bus stop to start our hop on hop off tour, much the same as we had done in the UK and
France. We did the tour for a little bit and then headed to La Rambla (the main tourist strip), for lunch. Here we found a terrible place called Moka. These people have no idea how to run a restaurant or maybe they just don't care. I ordered a chicken and chips meal and was presented with half a chicken and some chip. Sounds good. Sarah ordered a cannelloni and got 2 small soggy pieces of lasagne filled with... something! so we asked the waiter to take it back and get a decent sized serving and have it remade. He didn't say anything and just walked away with the meal. 10 minutes later he came back with the exact same thing just remade. So once again we complained and this time he tells us there is nothing he can do. €9.50 for this meal is just ridiculous so we told him we weren't paying for the "cannelloni" but would pay for the rest. When we got to the counter we had another argument with the manager who insisted we pay for the cannelloni because we "wasted" 2 portion. Mind you, two of these portion would have barely made a main meal!
After bantering a bit I got a little fed up and threw the money at them and left, Sarah being the calm one, collected the change and met me out the front. Don't eat at Moka on La Rambla in Barcelona, so not worth it!!!
After a disgusting lunch, we got back on the bus with slightly lowered spirits. This all changed however once we got to a stop on top of the hill that overlooked the entire city of Barcelona. Really quite a breathtaking sight. We finished our day with a trip to the beach before making our way to the Singing Fountain that night which was quite spectacular. This fountain does a show that lasts for 15 minutes at night and lights up with music in the background. Pretty cool really!
Our last full day in Barcelona, involved us heading back to the beach for a bit of lunch and a walk along the water. After a feed and a look around the markets we headed back to a main attraction of Barcelona: Park Guell. This is a place dedicated to Gaudi, a very prominent and very dead architect from Barcelona. His masterpiece is still in construction
125 years later!!! After a pretty relaxing day, we headed to La Rambla again but this time to have a few drinks and see the Flamenco dancing show. The show was amazing and went for just over an hour. I would recommend anyone who has the opportunity to see one, do it. Simply amazing performance. We got back to our room at around 1am and left for the train at 5am the next morning.
That next morning we headed to the airport and embarked on the most ridiculous travel ever.
We caught a 3 trains from our hostel to the airport;
caught a bus to the plane;
caught the plane to Dusseldorf Airport in Germany;
caught the bus to the airport;
caught another bus to the next plane;
caught that plane to the airport in Nice in France;
caught a bus into Monaco;
caught another bus to the train station and then;
got a taxi to our hotel!!!
I really don't understand why we had to travel for nearly 10 hours to get 2 hours away by car!!!
But now we are in Monaco so that is where this blog ends and the next shall pick up in
about a week or so.
Au Revoir!!!
