We went to the Sagrada Familia today - we thought all the fuss was about the outside of the structure. David Pepper recently flipped me an email from a friend of his who had just visited the Sagrada which began "When was the last time you spent 3 and a half hours in a church?". Little did we know...
They had audio tour devices both specifically for children and for adults. The ones for the kids were perfect and appropriate and engaged them both for a couple hours.
There is no way to couch this - I have little to nothing to do with churches in my life. I expected it to look inside like ... well - a fancy church. I walked in, looked up, said two words which I hope the kids never hear me say - the first of which was by coincidence religious, and... tears ran down my face - I am not kidding - whenever I tried to express my first emotions/thoughts when I looked up to Kim or the kids, my arms were coevered in goosebumps.
I have tried to figure out how to express the multitude of thoughts I have -
but can't. I remain speechless. There is nothiing I can say to begin to justify the beauty, incomprehensible imagination and brilliance conceived and executed over sooooo many years- Einstein+Da Vinci move over. That's it - I am not kidding.
Our landlord is a natural host and a foodie. He brought by a bottle of wonderful cava for us - and saw we had just finished washing clothes - he took them up to his apartment and (likely his wife Joana) dried and folded them for us. He recommended a Catalan upscale restaurant one block away only open three nights a week from 9:00 - midnight. Holy moly. It was divine. They took a shine to the four of us, heightened when we gave them Canadian flag pins. Lots of gratis s'amuse geuelles appetizers and a wonderful bottle of herbal digestif liquer that we barely touched after. Monkfish, duck, cuttlefish, calamari, shrimp, olives, the very best Iberian ham carpaccio, and what Kim claimed was the most creative and delicious salad she had ever had - I had my muzzle buried too deep in ham, cuttlefish and oh yes - homemade spinach local cheese ravioli to even notice. We had soooo
many laughs at dinner that Will's stomach hurt and Kim had tears running down her face. It was our wonderful finale to our wonderful Iberian vacation - one more day and night and off to Greece for three weeks.
Afterthoughts- Will has taken on the mantle of metro/subway guide and with 8 subway lines and a billion stops - he always gets us from where we are to where we want to go the fastest way - we niether question his choices nor even look at a map. And, having taken many, many, many subway rides on at least five different lines, the longest wait for a subway even when one is just pulling out of the station when we arrive is 2 and a half minutes - meaning no subways are more than 150 seconds apart on any of the lines we have tried - oince again, holy moly.
