I just wanted to post a quick blog about Rafa-mania!!! If I thought the EuroCup was a crazy spectacle in Spain... well, I guess I had yet to see a 5 hour tennis match in a college town!! What a fun night! The people are crazy about Rafa! :) Once again, there was a big screen TV out in the plaza mayor and crowds of people watching and cheering. Who knew they would do that for tennis!! I chose to watch the game out of the crowd a bit, and hung out at the irish pub again... a much more laid back environment. I´m done with day two of classes for the week. Exams are next week (after my Pamplona running with the bulls experience), so I´m gearing up for studying more than I have already. ... read more

Well, I made it through week one. It was a pretty stressful time, full of adjustments and flexibility on the part of everyone! The biggest news I have to report at this point is that we reserved a rental car to go to Pamplona next weekend. I´m going to see the Running of the Bulls. Mom, don´t worry, I´m not going to actually run... But how AMAZING to be there! We will leave next Friday and return on Sunday. My friend Carlos is convinced that he is running... I think he´s crazy. We´ll see what really happens. All I know is that it will be incredible to have pictures of the ACTUAL event. Jackman & Maria, can you imagine telling students that you have actually been to the running of the bulls???!!! Beyond that... Here´s my ... read more

Wow... has it been an interesting few days! Where did I leave off??? :) I left from Granada, taking the 3 hour bus ride to Sevilla. Upon arriving to Sevilla, I made it into the Alcazar just in time (before closing hours)... I think the guard was really annoyed, but the American blue eyes might have helped for the first time this trip! The Alcazar was amazing. Yet again, I was struck by the influence of the Moors in southern Spain. They began construction of the building in 1364, but it has had a few additions over the years. It consisted of so many neat rooms. Most of the modern Alcázar was built over Moorish ruins for King Pedro of Castile. He Moorish workers to build his palace giving it a distinctly Islamic design. The palace ... read more

By the way, check back on previous entries for pictures when I get them developed. If they'll put them on CD instead of prints, I'll add them to the right blog. We had a great time in Barcelona. The hostel, despite the initial boar encounter, was great, set in what I think was a wildlife reserve on the edge of the city. It was a three-building compound on the top of the hill in the woods. They served olive loaf sandwiches and warm milk for breakfast, which I wasn't expecting, but we could buy a huge hot Spanish meal for €6 in the afternoon. The old Gothic part of Barcelona is beautiful. It boasts a couple very old cathedrals. One, the Cathedral of St. Mary was built in the 1300s and is still in use today. ... read more

Today is presidential Election Day in Spain. It's between Zapatero and Rohoy, meaning basically Mr. Socialist or Slightly Less Socialist. I don’t think they actually even let Republicans past customs, Dad. Anyways, Election day here reminded me of Election day there, and how I can vote this year, and how technically that makes me Old, but even though my best friend turned 21 last week and I have the haircut of a 40 year old, I still feel like I do a lot of quite childish things amidst my seemingly adult life. According to my resume, I’m an adult. I have three jobs as an English teacher, two with younger kids, and one with two teenagers. But then, I get home from work and Laurel and I have our lentils and ask how each other’s day ... read more

Well, as a continuation to my last pathetic little entry, my Carnaval began on Sunday morning. I was still sick, but feeling better, as I finally broke down and took an ibuprofen for my fever. Ruso & I left early for Ciudad Rodrigo. I was excited as it was our first trip together & was pleasantly surprised that we had a blast & had no problems travelling together...even though I tend to get grouchy when i'm travelling & am hungry, tired, etc.... We took the bus to Rodrigo, which is a small pueblo outside of Salamanca (a much bigger, well-known, tourist location). I have to say that CIUDAD RODRIGO is one of the most charming places I've been to & I would like to go back. It's very small, but it's a walled city, so Ruso ... read more

Hey everyone! So I know I've been in Spain a few weeks already, and I probably haven't really had the chance to keep in contact with alot of you, so I'm finally starting to write in a blog so that I can update you all on my adventures in Europe if you're ever wondering what I'm up to/ want to become extremely jealous of me. So, I've been in Salamanca almost 4 weeks now and I'm really loving the city! It's so beautiful sometimes I think it belongs in a museum! My host family is really nice, right now I'm in a room by myself but I'll be getting a Brazilian roomate this weekend, so I'm really looking forward to meeting her! School is going well, I really like all of my classes and the teachers ... read more

I went to Salamanca this year for Christmas break. It was a tough decision because of course it would be great to go home, but our break is only 2 weeks here and it's a really long trip between here and Maine. I lived with a family and had the entire "student apartment" to myself because everyone else had gone home for Christmas. I took a Spanish course while I was there to try to improve my proficiency a little over the break. There were only a couple of other students in my class (which I should have expected, considering it's Christmas and all). In the morning from 9 to 10:40 we had Grammar and Vocabulary class and then after a 20 minute break we had Conversation and Composition. Once a week we had a Culture ... read more

And now readers a little poem: To one I've loved/lost: I neither know nor understand what has happened. years long ago you used to be my hero you had all the answers you had courage you weren't afraid to take risks Now it seems your someone I no longer know You've deteriorated bit by bit You're so shy and retreated So fragile and delicate No one can say anything without you falling to pieces. One day you want to lean on me the next you throw me away I never know who Im dealing with or when or where why..... I love you and maybe I haven't lost you I just need to say goodbye to you the you I expect to be there and is gone except in fleeting moments that I wait and long ... read more
