So here we go….Hi everyone!!! I know a lot of you are curious about what is going on with me so I decided to write a little and all of you can read about my adventures while I’m away this time. My visa came on Monday the 27th and I bought my ticket that day to leave the Wednesday that week so I had no time to say goodbye to many people. Maybe it was better that way because goodbyes are not my favorite thing. So if I didn’t let you know I was leaving forgive me. The orientation for my job was supposed to start in Madrid on Thursday the 30th and that is why I wanted to get there that soon. Of course even though I paid extra for the ticket to get there ... read more

Over the past three days I moved along another 46 km, mostly flat ground, upon a terrain which has been for the most part monotonous and unassuming. There have been surprises, of course, like viewing sunrise from the peak of a morning mountain with a friend or coming upon a field of sunfllowers bowing to the rising sun. I have seen more sunrises here than possibly in all my life until now combined. The morning hours are surely the most rewarding ones for walking. These past days have also included a bit of inner conflict. Once, near the peak of my turmoil, I was relieved to discover that I am not alone in this. It seems many are going through this kind of thing, at this stage of the walk. I can best illlustrate mine through ... read more

Well I can see I am not cut out for this blogger gig as content is king and I have been a lazy writer for the last nine days. So much has happened in the last week it is difficult to summarize it all. May 10, 2010 The next morning Bogdan and I walked on to Viana. One thing you will notice as you walk the Camino is that in addition to the steady stream of yellow arrows that mark the way, Pilgrims also leaves signs of their own as memorials or to supplement the yellow arrows in areas that are poorly marked. Bogdan and I had the biggest laugh when we came across the “manure” arrow that someone creatively thought to craft from fresh horse droppings and sticks. May 11, 2010 The next morning we ... read more

Notebook Entry Early morning departure after being woken early in the common room. Descent out of Castrojeriz then fairly steep ascent onto the mesata. Bitter wind and had fully regalia on for most of day into Fromista. After Itero de la Vega another, slower climb to the Tierra de Campos, and then steep descent before a relatively flat walk into Boadilla del Camino. Picked up beanie on way in - turned out it belonged to Nik, one of the young women from Cairns. Long flat walk along the Canal de Castilla. Close to Fromista, Orla and some of the other young ones began catching up at the end of the canal stage. She was able to recover some credibility for the Irish! ... read more

Hola a todos! I turned 23 on Wednesday last week and it ended up being a great week. On Monday, I went skiing in León with my friend Pablo at a small ski station called San Isidro. It's about an hour and 15 minute drive from Guardo. The weather ended up being perfect--really sunny and not too windy or cold. It was also great to go there on a Monday because there were hardly any people there and especially towards the end of the day we had some of the slopes practically to ourselves! I had gone skiing here once before in February on a Saturday with Iris, the P.E. teacher who works at my school, and one of his friends, Jesús. That day had also been a lot of fun but the difference in the ... read more

Hola a todos! Last weekend Carnival was celebrated in Guardo and students in Castilla y León had school off on Monday and Tuesday. I was originally thinking of traveling over the long weekend to Valencia (where I studied abroad 2 years ago) but I ended up deciding to stay in Guardo for the long weekend and I was glad I did! Guardo becomes quite lively during Carnival and many people, young and old alike, dress up in costumes on the weekend to celebrate. On Friday night, the network of underground bars in Guardo (a.k.a. "los Bajos") held a cross-dressing competition and when I went out on Friday night with Ana and some of her friends, we saw a lot of impressive and hilarious costumes! We were playing cards in a bar and seated at some of ... read more

Hola a todos! So January flew by and I regret never updating my blog! I had a great trip over my winter break visiting friends in London and Cambridge around Christmas time and then traveling to Amsterdam, Budapest and Vienna with my friend Courtney. (Will send links to my photos from this trip separately.) Things have been going really well for me so far in Spain in the new year. I'm teaching more private English lessons outside of my work at the high school than I was before winter break, which means I'm more occupied than before (a good thing in a small town!) and I'm earning more money that I can put towards travel. I am also working 3 more hours in the high school than I was before winter break because the other assistant ... read more

Dear family and friends, My students have been singing the Christmas carol "Santa Claus is Coming to Town" all week in preparation for the holiday performance scheduled for next Tuesday (their last day of class before break). Many of the students really enjoy the catchy tune of the carol, so it's been fun singing the song with them! Like I did for Thanksgiving and Halloween, I prepared some holiday oriented activities this week for Christmas. My students read a text about the origin of Santa Claus, took on roles in a short skit about St. Nicholas and played some Christmas vocabulary games. On Tuesday night I baked a double batch of chocolate chip cookies (with Lacasitos = Spanish version of M&Ms) to share with the teachers at my school on Wednesday. I set them out in ... read more

Hey everyone! Yesterday it snowed in Guardo for the first time this winter! Everyone has told us that last year it started snowing in mid October and throughout the winter there were particularly heavy snowfalls, so the snow has arrived in Guardo quite late in comparison to last year. This fall in Guardo was unusually warm and sunny for the most part, so I'm still bracing myself for the colder weather yet to come. This past week the temperatures have stuck close to freezing throughout the days and nights so I haven't faced anything yet that I'm not used to. It's funny because people were trying to scare me when I first got here saying things like "Oh yeah it gets down to -15 here in the winter", which sounds pretty bad until you realize that ... read more

Hola a todos! This Friday I celebrated Thanksgiving a day late with my flatmates in our apartment. Unlike Sofia and Mariana, I don't work at my school on Fridays so I had plenty of time to go out and buy all the ingredients for our Thanksgiving feast. I pretty much spent all day buying things or in the kitchen cooking but I had a good time seeing the fruits of my labor! There is a street market in Guardo on Fridays so I went there first where produce is much cheaper than in the supermarkets. I bought sour apples for our pie and green beans. I had to go to 2 different supermarkets before I found sweet potatoes. I was about to give up on having a sweet potato dish when I finally spotted them (called ... read more
