Week 7
Toledo Cathedral WEEK 7
Reluctantly, we left Oliva last Friday to make our way up to Bilbao. It happened to be quite cloudy which made leaving a little easier. In fact on the way to Toledo the sky turned to a very dark grey and we drove through a torrential downpour with lightning flashing all around us. The sky then cleared and we made the rest of the journey through the vineyards of Castilla la Mancha under a blue sky again. El Greco campsite was our home for the next 3 nights and we spent two very enjoyable days in Toledo which is a beatiful, well preserved historic city with cobbled, steep streets, impressive churches, convents and a stunning cathedral as well many quirky shops selling swords and an array of knives made from Toledo steel. El Greco lived and worked there so much of his work was on display in museums, galleries and the cathedral itself.
From there we moved on to Burgos which is a much larger city, about 100 miles south of Bilbao. It has another magnificent cathedral - we hoped the Catholic church appreciated our donations to their coffers. By now we were ready to come home
Week 7
Interesting water feature in restaurant and had visited enough tourist sights for one trip but still managed to appreciate the cycle ride into town and a Miro exhibition next to the cathedral.
The final leg was a drive to Bilbao then a fairly calm crossing back to Portsmouth. I was expecting the worst but even though there was a swell at times we both survived the 24 hour trip.
It's great to be back home after seven and a half weeks and 2150 miles even though the weather is cold and wet but it won't be long before we are itching to get away again!
