The Four Posts
The Four Posts on a beautiful day! Hey guys! I hope yall are having a good weekend! We (me and the other 3 Americans) decided to stay in Avila this weekend, which was really nice. I needed a weekend to relax. I'm still trying to catch up on sleep and my body has been going crazy this past week with getting sick on Wednesday night and having somewhat of a cold now! Please pray that I get better soon cause the next month here is going to be a very busy, but exciting one.
Yesterday was an amazing day. Probably the best day that I've had in Spain so far. The weather was amazing and we went to an amazing part of Avila. There is a place on the outskirts of Avila called Los Cuatros Postes. It's not much...its literally 4 posts with a "ceiling" and a stone cross in the middle. Supposedly it used to be a place where Santa Teresa (Avila's saint) used to go to pray. It's really pretty, and it also gives an amazing view to the walled in part of Avila. I have a ton of pictures of it on 'webshots' for yall to look at. There were a few other people
Avila and the Four Postes
Beautiful Avila from the Four Posts there doing the same thing we were. There was one big group of Spaniards that were pretty rowdy and you could tell that they had a good time no matter what they were doing. Emily, Ryann, and I were all taking pictures and one of them offered to take a picture of the three of us. So I gave him my camera and we went over to pose for the pic and he started to run off with my camera! I knew he was only joking (for the most part) because of the way they'd all been acting before. And then he came back and said he was only kidding and he was cracking up at himself harder than anyone else. Haha, he was hilarious.
We also visited a few churches and cathedrals in Avila. We went to Catedral de Santa Teresa which was pretty inside...its what you would expect from most churches/cathedrals in Europe. Nothing too elaborate...I've seen better, but it's still pretty neat to be living in a town that has a cathedral that looks like it did. I also got to see the 450 year old, furry, ugly tinted ring finger of Santa Teresa-ring included. It
Santa Teresa Cathedral
Santa Teresa Cathedral...this is where the nasty, brownish-green, hairy finger is! was pretty disgusting. Unfortunately, pictures were not allowed, otherwise, I would have taken a few pics so yall could join in on the naseousness with me. When the girls started to talk about it at dinner, I was having to force the food to stay down in my stomach. Really, who is the person who said, "hey, lets cut off the ring finger this dead woman and put it in a display case for all to come look at"...its a finger...of a dead person. Sure, the elaborate gold ring with the pretty green emerald in the middle is pretty, but that's not what I'll remember. I'll remember the long, brownish-green, furry finger that has a ball of fur at the top. Gross.
Friday night was pretty fun as well. Ryann, Emily, Rachel, Rafaela, and I went out for drinks and tapas. At many of the restaurants/bars in Avila, when you order a drink you get free tapas. At one bar we ordered colimochos (tinto-red wine with coke) for 1.50 euros (about $2) and got fried calamari and bocadillos-a ham sandwich basically. Not bad at all! At another bar I didn't know what to order (I don't really know mixed
Having fun!
My cocktail drink with the sparkler! drinks in English, let alone Spanish) so I told the waitress that I wanted a cocktail and to surprise me with the flavor and what was in it. So she brought me out this fun cocktail drink with fruit and a toothpick with streamers on it and then a sparkler in the drink. Haha! I've never seen that before. It's not like we don't get stared at enough because we are American, lets add a drink on fire to the mix to get MORE stares.
After tapas and drinks, we went out with some of the Spanish girls that live in the residencia. This was interesting. The way that the Spanish people go out is a bit different from the US. They sleep till about 10:30 pm, then go out from about 11:30 pm until 5 or 6 am. I think I'm too old for that...my body crashes at about 11 pm ever since I started student teaching. But we went out with them and hopped from bar to bar. Most of the bars are discotecas (there you go Lara, I went to a discoteca) and most of the music is salsa type music. Well, besides slow dancing which
Having fun!
Las Americanas only requires swaying from side to side in somewhat of a circle, I would have to say that God did not bless me with the ability to dance. Sure, it's fun to dance around if there's a large group of people and you are with a bunch of girlfriends that are just having fun together, but I don't really know these girls, and there was about 20 people in each bar/discoteca. I prefer to not put on solo performances when it comes to dancing. Plus, Spanish girls CAN DANCE and move their hips all around and shake it...how am I supposed to show that up? There's just no way...The girls are so nice though and have really made an effort to invite us out with them.
Next weekend I think we are going to Salamanca...not sure what is there, but I'll be sure to let yall know! Also, Emily and I bought our plane ticket yesterday for Semana Santa (Holy week-week before Easter). We have about 10 days off from school, so we're going to the Czech Republic and Switzerland! I'm extremely excited! Ryann and Rachel wanted to stay and travel around Spain, so we broke up into 2's.
That's about all for now. I'd love to hear how yall are doing! Thank you for the notes and prayers! God bless!
