Basque dancing
Girls performing a dance for the gringos ;) So we've been staying with the Urban House hostel, it's all very basic but the staff is really nice and they arrange lots of activities. On thursday evening we decided to follow along on their Basque Gastronomic tour with traditional basque food and customs. Pri stayed behind doing other stuff though.
Thursday Night: This event is held each thursday night and cost €25 to join, and is highly recommended for a nice time. The evening started at the main office with about 20-25 people or so trying to drink wine from a leather sachet. This is done by holding the sachet from a distance of 0.5-1 meter from your mouth and by squeezing the sachet getting the wine to hit your mouth... trying not to miss. A nice surprice was a group of young girls walking by and offering to perform a traditional dance accompanied by singing.
After this we walked to the old building owned by the/a basque gastronomic society where the dinner was held. This is a private society and the only way to get in is if you are part of a group with a member chef cooking for you. So the Urban House knows a
Paella for dinner
The basque paella chef that is a member and he does all the cooking on these dinners.
Started off with cider (basque of course), kind of like dry english cider, and small dishes (tapas-like). Main course consisted of a paella, with wine or what you like to go with it. To round it off we had a desert and some cherry liqueur. All in all the food wasn't that spectacular, but good non the less and with the drinks and basque tour, and even without adding the club tickets we got for a beach club that night (usually about €12), well worth the €25 if all cost.
We got some club tickets from some of the people at the dinner who weren't going, so we got Pri there with us for free 😊
Nice club, we got there early (like 1am), didn't get busy till about 2 and we left at 3 or so, there's a day tomorrow too... (Oh yeah, by the description you might've guessed crowded clubs are not my biggest passion 😊
Friday: Woke up late, weather was much better today so we went to the beach for some sun and a swim. Beach was crowded,
Dinner at the gastronomica
Our company for the evening water was not very hot but ok 😊
After some recommendations from a guy at the hostel, we did our own tapas tour. Lots of very good things to eat, and lots I have no clue what it was... See the pictures for some highlights. We rounded dinner off by going to this sea-food restaurant, really good food and thus really crowded. The calamaris plate... mmm...
Saturday: Bought breakfast at a local store and enjoyed it on a park-bench. Took a long walk up the hills to the statue over-looking the entire city.
We're leaving for Porto on the night-train tonight.
