Hello Loved Ones!!
I just heard about this Travel Blog through a friend, a cool way for everyone to know what am I doing over here and see some cool pics! So, I guess with this one I will start with some basic info about where I am in Spain, the interesting/odd customs, and a brief run down of my everyday life. Then, as I begin to most more frequently I will let everyone know what I do each day!
So, Spain is amazing. It is really hot, but it's not a hot like I have ever experienced. In Ohio, if it is hot, no matter where you go you are hot and it is impossible to escape, here in Spain when the weather is warmer (97-104 degrees Fahrenheit currently) you can just run in the shade and it is fine. Luckily, my city Sevilla is built for escaping the sun as all of the streets are shaded by extremely tall buildings. Once you are in the shade it is a perfect, cool, breezy climate.
There is a ton of history here in Sevilla, and it was named one of the 100 most beautiful places to live in
the world for its ancient Moorish and Gothic Roman architecture. It is amazing, just right down the street from me I have the third largest cathedral in the entire world! pretty cool huh? In this cathedral, where I frequent to study or read in its plaza and hear the bells ring, holds the ashes of Christopher Columbus as well as his son. Also pretty amazing. A church I happened to stop in the other day to buy some muffins from the convent, held the tomb of Hernan Cortes. In America, you don't just stumble upon something like that! Everyday I see something so beautiful it looks like it came right off of a postcard.
I live in the middle of the city called "El Centro." I live in the Santa Ann Residencia with my roommate Anna as well as hundred of Spanish students attending the Univeristy of Sevilla. We have air conditioning and a TV (even though it only has one channel and its Spanish fortune telling) and free internet. The food however, is awful, which leads me to my next topic.
Being a vegetarian in Spain is more or less unheard of. It is frowned upon and
not accepted. Even if you tell someone you are a vegetarian here, they automatically assume you still eat ham, fish, and chicken. Spain is the ham capital of the world, so not eating it is virtually unheard of. The food has by far been the most difficult thing for me so far, because there are no vegetables anywhere because everyone, i mean EVERYONE eats only meat and bread. Spanish Tapas, or "little plates" are really popular.. they are like mini appetizers that you can order a lot of to share with friends or a few for yourself. I have been eating a lot of "tortillas" which, in Spain, are not what you think.. the traditional white flour pressed tortilla, tortillas in Spain are like an egg quiche. Potato tortillas have been a life saver for me, one slice of potato and egg quiche will fill me up for awhile. Breakfast is not big here.. no one eats more than toast or a croissant and coffee. Lunch, or "Almuerzo" is huge, and this is when you eat your biggest meal of the day, not to mention while constantly, perpetually drinking some form of alcohol. Also, another favorite of mine that I
have discovered is toasted baguette, sliced and topped with olive oil and sugar. Try it! You will love it. Dinner is not until around 10:30 p.m. and the night life starts at about midnight and goes until 7 a.m., exhausting! But, in Sevilla the entire city shuts down from 2-5.. all stores close and the place is a ghost town. Why? Because its nap time, or "siesta" here in Sevilla. Wouldn't it be nice to be able to leave work for 3 hours to nap everday? I think so.
I go to school from 10-1 everday, which consists of our professor teaching us street language and then breaking to drink coffee for an hour. It is a pretty easy day. Then the day consists of window shopping, stopping for some Tinto de Verano, which is red wine on ice topped off with lemon or orange flavored Fanta...mmmm!! Then I go eat lunch, nap, write some emails, dinner, then out for the evening. The weekends are time for travel, and there is a lot more to come.
So here is the first post, and keep checking back as I will (hopefully) post daily for everyone to check up on
