Wow, I feel like I changed contries. Seville is so different to Valencia.
After a lovely 10 hour bus trip where the strange man next to me kept leaning into me while he was asleep and two young Spanish boys constantly telling me how beautiful I was in an attempt to pick me up (maybe I should of told them how old I was, I probably could of scared them off) it was time for me to navigate a new city. I arrived bright and early on Friday morning and headed straight to the hostel. I was dead tired, I suppose that will teach me for partying all Wednesday night and then catching an over night bus which I only half slept on. Unfortunately the hostel would not let me check in until 1 o´clock so I had to wander around for half a day like a zombie. I headed to the the Museo De Bellas Artes. It was a nice old building with a lot of paintings from Murillo, Zurbarán and Valdés amongst many others. Unfortunately being sooo tired I probably didn´t take full advantage of how impressive the art was but oh well. Once I got back to
Hanging out with an old friend
Princess Sparkle is just catching up with one of her old mattadore friends the hostel I was completely exhausted and managed to have a much needed siesta. Later that evening I met a group of lovely people and went out for tapas and sangria. Fun and relaxing.
The next morning I headed on out with Princess Sparkle to Plaza De Toros De La Real Maestranza, Spain´s oldest bullring. I did a tour around the museum. Apparently it was hear that bullfighting on foot began, prior to this it was all done on horseback. After this I met up with a friend and checked out Plaza De España. It is pretty impressive. Some of the newer Star Wars films were filmed here. We then crossed the road to Parque De Maria Luísa which is a massive park and wandered around for awhile until we stopped for a cool drink. After that we headed back to the hostel and met up with a group of other people and had our own home made tapas and just chilled before heading out for dinner.
Well unbeknownst to any of us we were all heading out to an interesting discovery which many would call dinner. One of the boys at the hostel who is Italian said
Plaza de la Espanea
Ok, let´s see who are the bigger nerds. I want to know which movie and scenes this is from he had found a great little resturaunt on the other side of the river with great food so we all said beauty (well not really but just to some up what we all said) and all headed off. As 8 of us walked into this very local looking resturaunt we got the distinct feeling that these people didn´t often see tourists and as we discovered less likely to have non-spanish speaking tourists. As we all perused the menu many of us tried to use the force to try and work out what we were ordering. The main thing on the menu was seafood (what a surprise). I asked the waiter in my poor attempt of Spanish what was vegetarian, the response I got was roled eyes and a groan. With a bit of pointing and basic spanish I thought I´d ordered a cheese salad and chips. What I actually got was a little different. I got a plate of potato crisps with wedges of cheese on top, I´m not sure what my expression was but the others said it was quite amusing. At this stage I think the waiter thought I was the strangest person in the world ordering something
like this, oh yeah my bits of lettuce and corn i.e salad came out 5 minutes later. But I think my meal was topped by one of the others when she thought she had ordered calemari and got 3 squids with tenticles and all. It was interesting. Just about everybody got something they weren´t expecting. We did however try everything and drank a bit of wine to assist with the digestive process. After we headed to a bar by the river. It was quite nice, we hung out for awhile there until retiring back to the hostel.
My third day in Spain I checked out the Catedral and the Giralda Tower. The Catedral was built on the sight of the main mosque after the Christians came to Seville. The Giralda Tower was the minaret of the mosque and is used as a bell tower. Both are vey impressive with a lot of gothic style and a bit of renaissance style. Following that I checked out the Alcázar. The Alcázar was origanally a fort but was eventually changed and developed many times to become a residence for later monarchs. After this I headed back to the hostel for a small
siesta then it was off for tapas then onto a local Flamenco show. This Flamenco was in a local bar and not one of those big tourist shows. It was quite good with only one dancer, singer and guitar player. The setting was a a bit rough and dirty and the dancer would not be what I call gorgeous but it was good to see real flamenco. Following the flamenco I headed back to the hostel as I was extremely ill, and no it was not self inflicted I have been sick through my whole trip so far unfortunately I was at my worst in Seville. In the morning I boarded a train to Madrid.
That concludes the Seville part of our Spanish adventure but stay tuned for some more exciting episodes including the dazzling Madrid and groovey Barcelona. Take care everyone.
