This is our last night in Las Alpujarras. The week has gone quickly for us and we are happy to have hiked four of our six days here. Today we fully intended to relax, read, and do laundry. We knew it was market day in Pitres so we wanted to go there and buy some fruit from the farmers who come to town on Friday. At the last minute we decided to hike to town since it is only a couple of kilometers. We threw on our Camelbaks so we would be able to carry our purchases back home, and we needed to wear our hiking boots because there is a stream that we cross (no bridge) on the way there. We made it to town and bought peaches and plums and honey, and then went ... read more

Yesterday was another rest day and we enjoyed an excursion to two high villages, Bubion and Capileira. Getting there requires hugging the side of a narrow road with switch backs, but around each corner another breathtaking view awaits. We wandered about and did some shopping - I ended up with a scarf and a lovely leather purse. When we returned home there was a long thunderstorm and pouring rain, but it made our little place that much more cozy. In the evening we ventured down the steep hillside for dinner in Mecina at a vegetarian restaurant we have enjoyed on our other visits. We sat next to a young couple from Berlin and visited with them throughout dinner exchanging addresses at the end with promises to visit each other in our home locations. Today was a ... read more

Tuesday September 17 Yesterday was a rest day. We lazed around in the morning and then went into Pitres to the market. After picking up our usual supplies of coffee, cheese, wine, etc. we went to one of the two bars in the small plaza for cafe solo (Sam), and Cafe con Leche for me. We are enjoying the time to just sit and visit and watch and rest. Back to our lovely patio to read for a couple hours, where we enjoyed the company of Oska, the smaller of our two canine hosts. For lunch we went back into Pitres and quickly discovered that not much is open on a Monday. We went to the second of the two bars in the small plaza, this one is known as "Paco's Bar," not to be confused ... read more

The most awe-inspiring, spine-tingling, and hair-raising roads of Andalusian, in my opinion, is the A-4130 in Las Alpujarras. To find thisroad, look for a village named Travelez in Las Alpujarras. Head east from that village on the only main road, A-4129. The A-4130 will be on the right hand side not too far from the village. If you are a roller coaster junkie, you know about the Boulder Dash, Raven, ShiveringTimbers, GhostRider, and Cyclone. Those are in the top 10 best roller coasters list compiled by the junkies. I am no... read more

Picking a place off the map back in Melbourne called Juviles (pronounced: ‘Who-billees’) then finding that getting there involves driving up kilometres of sinuous mountain roadways that seem too small for two-way traffic might at first seem a flaw in planning on my part especially when I have a bit of a fear of heights. And yes. It was an oversight to think that you could travel into the highest mountain range in Spain and not have to navigate such roads. Put it down to naïve enthusiasm. The trouble is that enthusiasm aside, I am seriously freaked out driving on these roads in Spain (being a passenger I mean – Dave is doing the driving!). Partly it is the driving on the right hand side of the road, partly the rapid pace of oncoming traffic and ... read more
