Our hound from hell!! 7 Days and Counting
Currently we are at home, eagerly counting the days to the next leg of our
'See the World While You Can Tour'. Wishing we were 40 years younger but probably appreciating it more than some of the really nice kids we have met on our travels so far, we have embarked on a plan to have a
'Gap Year' and back pack around some parts of the globe that we have always wanted to see.
Sooo...., this
'Gap Year for Geriatrics' is broken down into 6-8 week blocks after which we return home to our beautiful home in Spain and our pampered pooch, Ollie 'the West Highland White Hound From Hell', for R & R and planning time for the next leg.
We are doing it now, before the world economy collapses taking our hard earned dosh with it or oil prices mean we can't afford to take the car down the mountain to the bar, let alone buzz off around the globe!!!
Since retiring in Jan 2006 we have travelled 2 legs and this trip to India will be our third.
Trip1) Feb 2006 we
'did' UK to Hong
Kong, Australia, New Zealand, San Francisco and back home to Birmingham.
Then we moved to Spain, so other than Ann's
'Mahoney Girls’ Trip to Madeira' in Dec 2007 the time was spent settling in and enjoying our new life in the Alpujarras.
Trip 2 took us from new home in Spain to Birmingham UK, Dubai (well the airport, does that count?), Bangkok, Vietnam (north to south), Cambodia, Kuala Lumpur, Thailand (Kho Phi Phi), Dubai (airport again,) Birmingham and home.
As you can see we were impressed by Dubai Airport
(NOT) and I mention it because we pass through (quickly we hope) on
Trip 3 to
India. I was under the misguided impression that it was a magnificent airport, dripping with gold and a shopping experience to die for.
Well after we landed we were treated to a half hour bus tour by night, around the airport because Emirates is having a new terminal built and were eventually deposited into the midst of the
'rugby scrum' that is
'Arrivals, Transit'.
It is big, I'll grant you that and there is a lot of gold (if you like that sort of thing.....personally I don't).
You
Las Alpujarras
View from our garden.... the day of the fire!! could pay $500 for a raffle ticket to win a luxury, black, armour plated, monster, truck…. ('how would I get it home?' I mused). Other than that there were only camels, hookah pipes, prayer mats and washing powder????, cigarettes and booze the names of which we had never encountered before, expensive books and electricals.
I confess to being a little tempted by the
'buy a bottle of whisky (provenance unknown) and get a free suitcase' offer but was quickly reminded by D that we already had as much luggage as we were allowed, so which of our newly bought and expensive travel bags was I about to dump in favour of said plastic tat!!!! Not to mention the fact that we don't drink whisky of course but it was a
bargain.
So, still holding on to our hard earned dollars, we moved off to find our departure lounge, there being nowhere else to sit or get a drink. It was then that we saw literally hundreds of poor Asian's lying stretched out on the floor, wrapped in sheets, giving the distinct impression that the occupants had died some time during the night. We quickly sussed however, that the
Sky Over Berchules
The Sierra Nevada Natural Park above us poor things, many of whom made us look like
spring chickens, probably had an extremely long wait for a connecting flight to India or Pakistan and had merely bedded down for the night.
I mention all this because soon we are being forced to repeat the process of transit through Dubai on our trip to the Indian sub-continent.
DEEP JOY!!! Undaunted! we paid extra to ensure that we had the shortest possible stop over......delays,strikes or terrorist sabotage permitting.
CAN'T WAIT!!!!! Tomorrow we set off on the first leg of the journey to Birmingham UK where we will spend a few days with the family. Ollie is going on his hols to Aunty Liz and then will spend 3 weeks in kennels AAHH!!!!
