As this is the second time I have written this blog after not saving it, I wouldn’t expect too much. Frustration aside, I will begin again…we arrived in Belgrade after a beautiful train trip where we basically had the entire cart to ourselves so we were able to spread ourselves out quite comfortably. When we arrived at the train station we knew which tram we needed to catch and where to get off, but we could not at all find ticket stations, so we just hopped on and had a free trip, the driver seemed to be happy for us to not pay. We were happy with the location of the hostel being in the centre and close to everything we wanted to see and do. We arrived to a hostel owner who was keen to ... read more

“They used to hold Beer Fest in Kalemegdan, until a guy fell into the zoo and got eaten by a bear…. Oh, and here is the Roman well; a tourist fell in and died….” I had been told that Serbia was quite safe these days, but apparently wandering around the sprawling citadel complex of Kalemedgan in Belgrade is not for the faint-hearted. If I was to believe these stories my friend Duscia was telling me, this was treacherous territory indeed. Actually, I found Belgrade, and Serbia in general, about as warm and welcoming – and safe! – as one could hope for. I was visiting mainly to indulge in some Ottoman tourism (see my blog entry at: http://boundarystones.blogspot.com/2012/08/ottoman-ghosts-1-serbia.html), but I had the added bonus of getting to see, if briefly, a Serbian friend from Khartoum. And ... read more

After our nighttrain in a very quaint harry potter train, which involved a lot of head outside the window action, we arrived in serbia where we were immediately greeted by bombed buildings and harriets lost phone turmoil. We decided to do absolutely fuck all and have an extreme lie in to help recover (after harriet tramped around for a while trying to cancel her phone in a place where public phones do not exist). We discovered the wonders of adventure time on a really extreme cartoon channel. Once we had sorted our lives out we decided that it would be an excellent idea to go bungee jumping as its so fucking cheap here. We attempted to get there in a tram, but somehow ended up in some eastern european shrubbery under a gigantic half built motorway ... read more

12/07 I knew that I’d return to Exit this year and I bought the ticket already in April. Four days of extreme pleasure do not happen always. This time, though, I felt much better during the night and almost didn’t get tired and danced much less; generally, I spent less time at the festival, but that does not mean that I disliked it or anything of the kind. I just rested more. As always happens during my short trips, I had to make certain translations, so the pattern of the stay in Novi Sad was translate – dance – sleep – eat – translate – sleep – dance – sleep – eat – translate etc… This time I stayed in student dormitory Bajic alone in the room, because the second man moved out of the room ... read more

The Balkans is one of the most war torn area of Europe. It is the crossroads of empires and religions. It also has some of the best scenery in Europe as well from the mountains to the Adriatic Sea. My trip though these former Yugoslavcountries were a bit rushed. Mostly the places I stayed were 2 days at a time. Macedonia: Skopje - The capital of Macedonia seems to be going though a revitalization. The downtown area is full of cafes and restaurants and feels like half of it is under construction. It's a very relaxing town. I got into the main bus station and walked around a bit before getting my bearings straight. Skopje has a walled fort and many statues of url=http://en.w... read more

After writing about Vukovar I can't think of an appropriate pun to use in the title of this entry! Any ideas for this and future country/city puns please let me know. When the Vukovar visit was over, we moved on the most appropriate activity for travellers sobered by recent history - a wine tasting! Actually two different wine tastings scheduled for the same day! Still on the Croatian side, we rolled up just before noon, ready to take the edge off the day. I should probably add now that as I write this, it has been at least 35 degrees every day for the last 7 days. There is talk of a storm this weekend, but who knows when this unseasonably early heatwave will end. We firstly viewed the wine cellars and learned about the history ... read more

It was the day of the Eternal Derby. There would be tension in the air. It wasn’t apparent as I made my way outside after breakfast. It was just another sunny morning In Belgrade. I decided that I wouldn’t stick around in the city to watch the drama unfold ..... at least for the time being. I caught the bus to Ada Cinajila, the island playground in the Sava River where Belgrade goes to relax on a summer weekend. It is now dominated by the new bridge crossing the river. Ada Cinajila is a combination of sport and relaxtion. The side closest to the city is the base for both the Red Star and Partizan rowing clubs. The local versions of Oxford and Cambridge were out on the water, presumably training to be Olympic hopefuls later ... read more

After the extraordinary level of helpfulness from the guys in the management and press office of KK Crvena Zvezda in procuring the basketball derby ticket the previous night, there is always one that spoils it. My mind suffers eternal flashback to the security guard waving his gun at an empty BKV Elore in Budapest. Belgrade's "Mr Unhelpful" was to be found at the defunct home of FK Obilic. In advance of my derby ticket forray, I had decided another tour of the grounds was in order. If you are reading this blog and have read others, you will have spotted the pattern developing - if there is some stadium architecture to see, I will endeavour to get to it. It really is a great way to see behind the scenes of a city - to go ... read more

There's a very ancient saying, going back hundreds of years, "oh bugger". It seems I've got a final in a few hours, which would normally be fine, but I'm crippled by a tragically fatal set of problems, which have a lot to do with packing and finally leaving Europe. In the mean time I'm going to do something that needs to happen. Study for that exam? Hell no! Continue updating from the Balkans: Serbia, or, new ground: Well alright then, we’re finally out of the leg of the woods where I bored just about everyone under the sun by noting that I’d been here before, and we entered the Balkans proper. Our actual part of this trip’s kind of funny in its own way. Mind you, the bus we were on was already bound for crazy ... read more
