The bus back from Sarajevo had the benefit of leaving room the Main Bus Station. We were spared going back to Lukavica at an unearthly hour. The Lasta bus pulled out on time and we headed up into the hills. There was still a frost on the ground at the first service stop. There were signs warning of landmines just beyond our service area. We arrived at the Lasta bus depot in Belgrade, which was handy for checking the new Ticketline office to see if there were any Partizan v Fenerbache basketball tickets left. There were blank looks all round…..so that was a No then! A similar experience was encountered in the hunt for a Red Star pin badge at their downtown shop. The receptionist treated us like long lost friends at the Slavija – at ... read more

There was a sleepy Sunday morning feel as we approached the ground at FK Zeleznicar – the railwayman. The ground had obviously been developed from old railway yards, although part of the original complex now seemed to have been taken over by a coach park. The transport theme continued under the “stand”, where a rusting car laid in a state of decay. The ground consisted of one side of terracing with the dugouts being opposite. A cinder training pitch lay beyond. The weeds in the dugouts and the state of the goals on the training pitch suggested a lack of practice at set pieces in the recent past. A stray dog woke from his Sunday slumber in the corner of the training pitch, attracted by the smell of a nearby resident cooking a spot of Sunday ... read more

At the end of the last year’s visit and my 2nd eternal derby, the Man in the Middle posed the question ……….. “is that the Belgrade derby out the system then?” I pondered and concluded that it was probably time to move on to pastures new. Never say never again! A year on and we find ourselves on the 9.28 Belgrade express once again. The merry band of 2 has grown to 3. The Man in the Middle is back and we are joined by Football Travels With Ross, keen to check out the Marakana for his first competitive action there since the heady days of 1989. In those days before the internet made fixture spotting relatively simple and visas were required, this was an achievement in it’s own right. We passed the time away talking ... read more

New country! New red shape on the map! I definitely did not know what region Belgrade was in (the blog required me to pick a region rather than a city), so I guessed until I found Belgrade. Apparently it's west. So keep that in your pocket, because someday you'll need that information. Anyway, Belgrade. We made it! We almost didn't make it again. So on Friday Darcy and I made delicious food, drank a bunch of wine, and went back to the bus stop, determined to get on the first bus that said Belgrade or Beograd or something that seemed like Serbia. 11:00 came and went. And no bus. So we waited. And waited. At 11:45 we met a Serbian, which made us feel better. At 12:15 we met another Serbian, which made everyone feel better. ... read more

Beautiful Belgrade...what a city! I have to say, when we first got off the bus and started walking to our hostel we were really not sure about the city we were in. Abandoned buildings, graffiti everywhere, we felt a little unsafe as we made our way down the backstreets of Belgrade to the Spirit Hostel which was to be our home for the next few nights. But the longer you spend there and the more you understand the history of what the city has been through, unattractive though it may be on the surface, the more the beauty of it grows on you. It is a city of contrasts with small underground bars found next to blaring, show-offy ‘Silicon Valley’ and by the time we left, we both thought that the longer you stayed there, the ... read more

Hello my fellow travellers! After another great night's sleep at Nikola's place the two of us headed out together because he had to go to work today, Alex left us yesterday so it was just the two of us. I was planning on visiting the Museum of Yugoslavian History with the House of Flowers and then just spend the rest of the day walking around the pedestrian areas of Belgrade, trying to find something nice for Lisa. I liked the museum quite a lot, especially the House of Flowers where Tito is buried. It was a calm and serene place, very beautiful. The museum was also very nice with friendly guards, good information and a great layout/planning. I ended up spending quite some hours here, enjoying the various artefacts on display. It was very interesting to ... read more

Hello my fellow travellers! After a really good night's sleep (only interruption was when Alex returned from his late exploration) I was ready to take on the city of Belgrade! Me and Alex woke up about the same time and headed out together, although him by bicycle and me by bus. I kept a pretty good pace across town and covered pretty much all I wanted to see in Belgrade in a single day actually which is pretty nice. The first site that I visited was of course the massive Church of Saint Sava, it's one of the largest churches in the world and especially amongst Orthodox places of worship. It was built on the spot where Saint Sava was burned by the Ottomans in 1595. It was originally planned to be constructed on the 300 ... read more

Hello my fellow travellers! After a shaky, but eventually quite pleasant, day in Bucharest yesterday I was on the train bound for Belgrade with hopes of a relaxing stay with a confirmed and well recommended host. Things started off pretty poorly as I realized I'd forgotten to buy water for the eight hours train ride to Timisoara on the Romanian border. Things didn't exactly get better as the train was smacked completely full and was steaming hot. Even worse it left the station with roughly 40 minutes delay, which isn't a good thing when you have a transit time of 30 minutes in Timisoara. I wasn't exactly feeling to optimistic about it! Once we finally got rolling I actually did manage to get a little bit of sleep, but it was quite scarce as I spent ... read more

First entry...of another trip! I know, life can be like a Russian doll...let's see if I can put a trip into a trip...into another trip...so far, it looks like it's going the right way....or the Russian doll way! More about Russia...way later... Leslie and Tiffany are for the next two weeks with their grandparents in Luxembourg. And, they are having all day French classes for two weeks in a row. As they say...hey Papa, these are not holidays! Well, they know what is coming next and I told them...August may not be holidays....do you truly want to be in school non-stop from September to June...I got a smile for a reply! They know what is coming! For me, it's time to do...something I should have done 20 years ago....or so! I always dreamt of doing a ... read more

July 9, 2013 Initially I, of course, had great plans for a comprehensive Balkan trip, including the best places (mostly Unesco World Heritage Sites) in Serbia, Macedonia, Kotor, and Albania. The trip gradually boiled down to Serbia (Exit Festival in Novi Sad) and Kotor, with possible excursions to Dubrovnik in Croatia and Shkoder in Albania. Unlike the previous year, we’d not take the exhausting bus from Beograd to Montenegrin coast along the serpentine, but simply fly from Beograd to Kotor and back. Our (my and Vasily’s) second trip to Serbia and Montenegro was arranged somewhere in the end of March or beginning of April; we bought air tickets for a modest price and waited patiently. Alexey (my schoolmate) decided to join us later and would only stay with us in Serbia. This time we stayed one ... read more
