Well, we made it. Four nights and four days on the Trans-Siberian Express, (I know, not so express). It was the train that made 44 stops along the way. So we have left Europe and we are now in Asia, we went through five time zones, travelled 5,185km, (will have to work out for yourselves what that is in miles) and we are still in Russia, blimey! Does this country never end? On the whole it was a great journey, but what with the clocks going forward one hour every day and on one day two hours you didn’t know whether to eat, sleep, drink or read but the majority of the time it was never what you should be doing for that time of day and what with it not getting dark until 11.30pm it ... read more

Moscow, ridiculous prices, riddled with corruption and filled with new Russian millionaires. These thoughts fade away while standing in the grand space that is Red Square. The Kremlin, the Apex of Russian political power dominates one side of the square, the huge ornate GUM shopping centre graces the opposing side and at the far end with its distinctive architecture, the colourful domes of St Basils Cathedral keep drawing your attention. These landmarks scream Russia more than anything else we've seen. The sky darkens and the blue skies fade away, the wind whips around our legs rapidly gaining force and a few snowflakes begin to fall, is this the start of something that will make, such a beautiful sight even more magical? The few flakes rapidly turn into a blizzard, the wind forces them horizontally into our ... read more

First stop: Moscow! Wednesday 23rd March Well technically it was Riga for a stopover to make the flight cheaper, where the plane suddenly changed from shotputters to women adorning themselves with fur and rather scary looking men. As we arrived late at night we had pre booked a taxi to take us to the hostel. Our driver took us outside to a very snowy -7 and indicated that we should follow him. As we followed him along highways, through alleyways, through dingy car parks and derelict buildings our hearts began to pump; partly due to our packs being laden down with high heels, straighteners, hairdryers and make up but mostly because we were being dramatic and thought it was going to be our end by a member of the KBG...on our very first day! Having finally ... read more

12/09/2010 till 15/09/2010 After four days on the train I got off, without sleeping that night (had some troubles with the 5 hours time difference), and smelling absolutely awful (no shower) at 4h45 local time I arrived in Irkutsk. To my astonished but pleasant surprise Natasha (Ruslan's friend) was waiting for me at the station! Already from the first moment we had awesome laughs and that wouldn't change for the coming days. Again Natasha was an incredible friendly, very optimistic 24h/day, helpful girl. She really likes to laugh! Only one time I scared her a bit when I first arrived, still sleepy, I told her that it was very nice of her to host me, cause for all you know I m a serial rapist/killer, giving her a long stare.....but then she laughed again!:)) After some ... read more

Trans Mongolian Express to Ulaanbaatar Boarded the train for Ulaanbaatar, which had Mongolian staff working on board. The train was the oldest yet, but the windows opened fully in each cabin, which made a nice change. The forth person in our cabin was Jean - a very chatty French man who was doing the Trans Mongolian trip from St Petersburg to Beijing in 3 weeks with very few stops. Also on board was Liam and Angela, who recognised us from Listvyanka. Liam was on a 5 month trip similar to ours and Angela, a friend of Liams was travelling with him for the first 3 weeks, to Beijing. After a few vodka's, Jean mentioned that he had a funny French movie on a USB key, so we watched it on my netbook in our cabin. After ... read more

Trans Siberian Express to Irkutsk Boarded the train at 6am Tyumen time. This time, it was a much newer train - the number 002 “Roysver” train, which was apparently made within the last 10 years. It seemed extremely modern inside, however, because of this, it lacked the character and feel of the first train that we caught. I'm sure anyone not travelling for the sheer experience would prefer the newer train. There were more non-Russian travellers on board this train, with camera's, a lot of which probably booked their Trans-Siberian trip through expensive tour agencies. Larissa, the lady we shared our cabin with was a very friendly Russian lady travelling with a colleague (in another cabin) to Omsk. We stopped at a busy station in the late afternoon, where she bought some smoked fish from sellers ... read more

I booked my ticket to Irkutsk in advance with an English travel agent. I'm sure I was ripped off on commission but by the time I got to Russia the train was booked out so it actually worked out pretty well. I travelled by 3rd class platzcart because it was about half price. It's effectively an open carriage with 60 bunks. I went into it with the attitude that it probably won't kill me. I wrote most of this on my iTouch while on the train. Day 1 Covered in sweat freak heat wave about to die.37 degrees! Not a single backpacker in sight! Oh dear god. It's been 10 minutes and already I desperately need a shower! Assuming all foreigners are complete idiots a Russian woman made my bed! Nice! Day 2 Air-conditioning does work ... read more

We're back on the Trans-Siberian again but only for a day as we make our way from Ulan Ude to Irkutsk along the shores of Lake Baikal. Its 2 hours before we get our first view of the lake way off in the distance, just a thin, dark blue line beneath the distant mountains. Then, after a few more glimpses from the gaps between the trees, the train emerges from the forested hills and we are right at the lake side. If you really squint you can just about make out the mountains on the other side of the lake 50 miles away. When the Trans-Siberian first opened the stretch of track round the lake didn't exist. The carriages, passengers and goods were ferried the 50 miles across the lake on two icebreakers, the Baikal and ... read more

The bus trip back to Ulan-Ude was uneventful. This time I got to sit next to a Russian guy who didn't speak any English so it was a load of laughs :(. Next day caught the day train to Irkutsk which skirts around the Lake Baikal. Unfortunately the weather wasn't that great, so the first look I got of it through the train window was in the rain and a bit gloomy. The weather did clear up a bit though and I went a bit nuts with the camera even though still on the train. We also went through a couple of long tunnels which I think must be part of the Circum-Baikal route. Arrived in Irkutsk about 4pm and found my hostel. As it stays light for so long I still had about 1/2 day ... read more
