Hi all, Not alble to do a proper entry as I'm at an internet cafe here but I just wanted to inform those who care (parents etc...!) that I'm alive and well. Four nights and five days on the train has drained me but the trip was out of this world... snow and snow and snow... endless journey. Anyhow, I'm in Irkutsk where it is a balmy -14C. I am heading to Lake Baikal tomorrow which holds 20% of the world's fresh water... just in case you were wondering. Snowmobiling and then off to Mongolia. Will post proper blog soon. Best always, J.... read more

We arrived in Vladivostock, Russia on a cold dark winter's morning, having completed the longest train journey of our lives so far - a journey of 32 hours fuelled by the last of our chinese noodles and lots of coffee. We had travelled on Chinese train N23 from Harbin in northwest China crossing the border into Russia. What made the journey unique was the fact that our carriage, packed solid with enormous Russians, was the only carriage on the N23 bound for Russia. It would be detached from the N23 and joined onto a Russian train as the journey progressed, at one point even being lifted by a crane so it could be moved from the Chinese track system onto Russian tracks. At times though, the effort of keeping all the inbound Russians and tourists (me ... read more

(Quick note...this was posted from a computer in China and the text format gets a bit funny) We did have a few days off the train in Siberia. First we had three days and two nighs at Listyvanka, a small village in a Russian national park on Lake Baikal. Lake Baikal is famous for holding 20 percent of the worlds fresh water and it boasts a huge variety of marine life which is not found elsewhere in the world, including a freshwater seal. The omul fish is eaten by the locals and not exported outside the area, or at least Russia. We toured the musuem and the village with our local guide, Ella. We were the guests of Olga and Victor, staying in their cozy izba. A typical Siberial izba is basically a giant stove/chimney which ... read more

My time in lovely Irkutsk has come to an end. Tonight I take the 4 day train to Moscow. I spent yeserday afternoon at lake Baikal. It was like a dream. I stepped of the bus and walked around the stalls of people selling smoked fish. As I was heading toward a cafe a guy took me oby the arm and almost forced me onto his tour boat. It was great! I stool outside in the chilling wind as we cruised around the Southern part of the lake. Baikal is so big is looks more like the sea than a lake. And it was so cold it was hard to imagine any creatures able to live in such frigid water. Apparently 80% of the wildlife in the lake is special to Baikal and can only be ... read more

Peeking out of the train window as the sun came up this morning we were greeted with a beautiful surprise. We were entering a real life winter-wonderland. Snow and ice blanketed the entire countryside. The half-frozen rivers we passed we steaming in the cold winter air and the small wooden houses outside all had little chimneys billowing with white smoke. It looked like a scene from a fairy tale. As the sun appeared in a hazy shade of pink, we could see people walking along the train lines bundled in big wool coats with giant fur hats. Welcome to Russia!! The train ride from Ulaanbataar seemed much longer than the 36 hours it was. I came back from the Gobi with a very bad cold which made sitting in a small train compartment with three other ... read more

The adventure is well under way: I have reached the famed Irkoutsk, the mystical town one always reads about in stories of goulags and exile, the heart of Siberia, the bear country, the harshest place one can think off, buried under meters of snow and thrown about by hurling winds, the place where only the fittest and strongest survive, most die of excess vodka. Well it is isn't true, the people are pleasant, the girls slim and good looking, the sun is shining and life is enjoyable. I recently got off the trans-Siberian and am enjoying the sun and easy going provincial atmosphere of the town. It is small but not without its charm, there are still a lot of old wooden houses build by the families of the Decembrists, when they were exiled here. Irkoutsk ... read more

To understand what life is like on the Trans-Siberian express it is first necessary to understand what the train is like. I'll first describe a second ("kupe") class carriage on train number 10, Moscow to Irkutsk. The carriage is divided into about seven compartments, each about 5.5 feet wide by 7 feet deep. The main space is taken up by four bunk beds, which double as seats during the day, and can be stowed against the carriage walls. Between the beds is a space of about 1.5 feet, and at the opposite end to the door is a small table about 1.5 feet square. A useful tip is that the lower bunks are a couple of inches larger in both dimensions than the upper bunks, so if you are a larger person go for the bottom ... read more

Lep pozdrav vsem skupaj! Prisla sva v Irkutsk. 5500 km in tri dni voznje je hitro minilo. Z Moskvo sva koncala. Tam smo dali ... read more

Yesterday we have left Listvianka and returned to Irkutsk. We took a boat this time (not the bus), just for a change. It was a good choice though... It was definitevely more spacious... For us and our bags. Also here we booked a homestay, by an older lady, Tamara, that used to be german teacher. This simplified the communication a great deal. Well - between the guys and the lady... my German is non existent. Today we wondered around the city. In LP Irkutsk is described as Siberian Pearl... it might have been so once upon the time, but there is little over of its past polish. There is not much to see or to do and we're glad we have planned to move immediately on. The only highlight of the town is definitevely the ... read more
