Russia was an interesting place. Saw where Anastacia might have existed, lots of palaces. The midnight sun is incredible, its like the sun shines through the night, it never gets dark. Wasnt much choice for places to eat, not much choice of food either, but the rest was interesting.... read more

From November 1997 to February 1998, I was detailed to the White House Office of the Federal Environmental Executive, where I helped write several Executive Orders related to Greening of the Government. The only travel I did was for my boss. She got sick, and with 24 hours notice I had to fly to Lawton, Oklahoma to give a speech at the Oklahoma Environmental Educators Conference. I was in good company; following my speech Senator Inhofe gave his speech. In March 1998, I was brought back to NAVFAC as Program Manager with the Arctic Military Environmental Cooperation (AMEC) program between the U.S., Norway, and Russia. I took several business trips including to Moscow, Russia in June for a technical meeting. My trip to Russia was supposed to be for two weeks. The first week was technical ... read more

Hey there folks (it's my turn to type this time ...gmt) Well, we've been here in Moscow for 4 days now and we're still alive and kicking. Here's an interesting adventure that happened to us yesterday though. We were sitting around in the Metro station waiting for a surprise rain-storm to subside when a Police Officer approached us and asked to see our Passports. This was the second time that a policeman had made such a request during the course of the afternoon (We thought some murder had been committed by a foreigner or something). Of course, we generally don't walk around with our Passports and valuables on our person so when we showed him our photocopies he didn't seem too impressed and he brought us over to talk to his other police-type buddies. Of course, ... read more

Hi Everyone! How's it going? Well, we have just come down from Murmansk, a 35 hour, 2 night train ride to Moscow. It was pretty comfortable though, we bribed our carriage lady with a Canadian flag pin and she took good care of us. We even got breakfast in the first morning. Plus there was this Russian guy in our compartment who didn't speak a lick of English, but we managed to figure out he was a officer in he army or something, anyways, he pulled out this huge bag of food, bread, sausages, tomatoes, cucumbers, boiled eggs, home brew beer. Man, we haven't eaten that much since I don't even know when. Apparently it's traditional on the trains though for Russians to share their food. We gave him a nectarine. (And some cheese) So Murmansk ... read more

Hey Everybody, Here’s a travel update from St. Petersburg. Firstly, Eric and I are alive (that’s the most important part). We crossed into Russia early Saturday morning after taking a 27 hour train ride from Warsaw, Poland which crossed through Belarus, Lithuania and Latvia before entering Russia. The border crossings were all quite easy actually and I was glad all of our paperwork was in order. Poland was surprisingly beautiful by the way. If any of you have any inclinations to travel consider Poland (Krakow is one of the most beautiful and fun cities I’ve ever been in). So, now we’re in St. Petersburg. This city is absolutely gigantic. We’ve spent 5 days here already and I’m sure we haven’t even seen half of it. The architectural style of all of the buildings is very different ... read more

Moscow 1989-1995 To get a flavour of the world, I arrived in Moscow in August 1989, just two months before the Berlin Wall was turned down. I spent in Moscow six years, in a city where stricking changes were taking place. All of us that spent together such a long time, do agree that there are no words of gratitude to our Russian teachers that were dedicated to their work in spite of the whole economic and social crisis that the country underwent. ... read more
