the ferry on Lena river
We arrived at Yakutsk at about 5:00 AM. Two hours before that, we arrived at Nizhny Bestiakh, which is the town from the other side of Lena river. Sun was already shining. A few minutes before that, signs on the road were saying: go straight for Yakutsk, 12 km to Yakutsk etc. but after crossing the town all the signs disappeared and we started wondering where is the turn to Yakutsk. We turned back to ask someone, but nobody was out. We tried our luck turning right into a somewhat main street that went down towards the river, and one or two minutes later a sleepy port was revealed. That port is the only way to reach Yakutsk in summer, and you really have to guess where it is! We knew that we'd need a ferry to cross, but we imagined there would be a clearer guidance to a city of 200,000 people. "Yakutsk?" we asked, and the bouncer on the ferry nodded indifferently and guided us to park next to 7 other Bukhanka's like ours. An hour later, the ferry was full of vehicles and left the port, crossing three kilometers
of the riverbed. An hour of sailing and we are on the other side, we got Yakutsk.
After catching up some sleep on a random meadow on the outskirts of the city, we drove to George, the host we arranged with through Couchsurfing, after some successful experience we already had with it. George was open and friendly, hosted us warmly and invited us all to many nice activities.
The next morning we met Ruslan, the media guy of the local Off-Road Club. George introduced us to him and he went with us change tires for the car and simultaneously photographed and interviewed us for his TV host, and YouTube channel.
The next day, also by proposal of George, we went kayaking in the river with a group of women and guide them. When invited to go we weren't exactly expecting to be part of women's empowerment, but in the end it was really nice.
And finally, George invited us to his parents' summer house at the edge of town near the forest, to experiment "Banya", a traditional Russian sauna. At first it seems like a normal sauna, but then the interesting phase begins. A friend of
George, a big Russian guy called Sergei who joined us for the evening, invited us one by one to the hot steam room, naked of course, and performed the work he learned from his father and grandfather: using a bundle of forest trees' branches and leaves, he whipped us all over our bodies and levitated drops boiling water and hot air above us when we lie on a cot. Outside it sounds like nothing less than sexual abuse, but in reality it is good and pleasant as an excellent massage. According to Russian tradition, you immediately exit the boiling room straight into a freezing shower to complete the experience. In short, a unique and authentic experience of a real family Banya with real Russians, without a glimmer of tourism. We stayed to sleep in the summer house's guest room and the next day we met George's mother who cooked delicious meals for us and showed us traditional Yakutian clothing, and his hairdresser sister who gave gal the haircut he needed for a long time.
