הקדשנו כמה ימים טובים בחברובסק לקניות, התארגנויות, טיפולים ושיפורים לקראת המסע. בסופו של דבר היינו מוכנים לצאת לדרך We dedicated a few days in Khabarovsk for shopping, arrangements, service and improvements before the journey. Eventually we were ready to go.... read more

We set out to fulfill our journey's quest and buy a Russian car to drive with across Siberia and Mongolia. After having no luck finding one in Vladivostok due to an extra ordinary Japanese car market, we took the Trans-Siberian night-train to Khabarovsk, because if you want to change your luck you have to change your place first. In Khabarovsk we located the address of the local synagogue in an attempt to find a good base camp for buying a car. we arrived at the synagogue on the day of "Shavuot" (a Jewish holy day), where a nice Russian speaking watchman let us in. we asked when is the ceremony. and after understanding we have a c... read more

"Wow this is the most expensive thing I've ever held in my hand" so says this 12 year old boy holding my iPad in his hands preciously on his way home with his grandma to Kazakstan. But before we meet him we make a tour of Khabarovsk. Khabarovsk is one of the prettier cities in Russia's Far East. Unlike so many places in Russia, the city has allocated and spent funds to develop its riverside, parks, monuments and walkways. Khabarovsk was founded in 1858 as a military post by Eastern Siberia's Governor General Count Nikolai Muravyov (later became Muravyov-Amursky), during his campaign to take the Amur back from the Manchus (the local indigenous people at the time). In 1897 the Trans-Siberian railway arrived from Vladivastok. Back in the 1920's the town was seized by China before ... read more

The Trans Siberian railway deserves a blog of it's very own. Our first experience was the overnight journey from Vladivostok to Khabarovsk. We had already collected our tickets the day before so knew the layout of the railwaystation but waited in the central seating area for the number of our platform to be displayed and number 1 duly came up.Luckily this was only down one flight of stairs and through the doors so was relatively easy.We located our carriage, number 12,and the provodnitsa (attendant) who was a bit bemused by our e-ticket but let us on so we boarded our first Trans Siberian train at 7pm.The locals have to show their passports to board the trains but so far we have not had to,maybe we're not quite blending in with the locals yet. We found our four ... read more

Khabarovsk was very hot and humid - 31degrees apparently. We found it to be a really attractive city centre, and enjoyed walking down by the river, which was more like being at the seaside. Cant imagine it with the river so frozen that cars can drive on it. We explored the Museum of Regional Studies to get out of the heat (meeting our new Aussie friends along the way). Unfortuantely hardly any English descriptions, but it varies from stuffed local animals, through local tribal history, to general russian history and household items. Not much else to see or do, but still worth an overnight stop. We stocked up on food for the train journey and as a noisy thunderstorm broke we again strugled for a bit to find somewhere to eat, before ending up in a ... read more

Almost until the last minute I was standing on the track talking to Aliki before jumping on the train to Khabarovsk. I boarded the train, as usual the train attendant passed by to take the copy of your ticket, but for some reason everyone except for me already got their linen beforehand – I thought maybe it’s because I was standing outside for so long. Turned out , even for the train attendant a foreigner was something special – I asked him for the linen, he told me he’d bring it… after waiting like 1h I decided to pass by his ‘’office’’ – he started asking me all the typical “OMG a foreigner” questions :) After some 15min I got my linen and free chocolate on top of that ;) I made my ‘’bed’’ – lay ... read more

Finally after 50 hours on that damn train, which was hot and stinky, I had reached Khabarovsk, which turned out to be a pretty pleasant place. And maybe even the cleanest city I've been to since...can't remember. I stayed in the train stations resting room for the night then the following day walked the city. It lies along the beautiful Amur river, filled with loads of parks, tsarist era buildings (way better than soviet style to be sure) an amazing boardwalk area boasting many cafes and snack stalls. I walked to Dynamo park on the evening I arrived and watched as people strolled about. I got eaten by mosquitoes though! The next day I was up really early and walked to the nearby town center, where I saw historic buildings, and walked the gargantuan board walk ... read more

The train number on the train didn't match the one on my ticket, and who knows what platform it was on, but it seemed to be going to Khabarovsk (my cyrillic is coming in handy), so I took my chances. The provodinitsa (carriage attendant) didn't kick me off so I took that as a good sign. I was very lucky because the carriage was nearly empty, so I ended up getting the whole compartment to myself instead of having to share with 3 others. And I was really looking forward to those all-night vodka parties I had heard of - not! And because Vladivostok is the start of the line, the toilet was respectable and stayed that way. It is so cramped in there though that you had hardly fit your head above the basin to ... read more
