My trip to the Lisboa area, and Porto are, as they say, "Up in the air" for now. My friend has not yet closed on her beach home in Cascais, due to many issues related to closing the sale. So, as always, I have a Plan B just in case. So, after a few days in Munich, I will either take the train to Slovenia, then maybe on to Athens, or perhaps make a little side trip to Albania. The train from Munich to Ljubljana is rather short, just over six hours. And very affordable. It takes about the same amount of time as flying. In fact, travel experts are suggesting I fly into Venice, and take the bus! I don't think so! Actually, I ended up in Lisboa on Monday. I decided that heading south ... read more

A beautiful sunrise this morning. Plenty of activities to choose from if you’re so inclined. Spanish class, Deck Quoits, Line dancing, Lectures, Carpet Bowls and much more! We were happy to chat to fellow passengers, take a walk around the deck and listening to the choir being developed with passengers - they were learning a sea shanty and were very good, it certainly got the feet tapping. The weather was warm enough to have Paella Corner lunch on the Lido deck, we opted for a light snack as it’s formal night this evening so saving ourselves for that. Another craft class this afternoon making a puzzle greeting card, not sure about this one so it may well get left in the cabin LOL.... read more

We arrive in Lisbon at just before 8am. Lisbon is the capital city of Portugal, it is also the westernmost large city in Europe. Lisbon is one of the oldest cities in the world, predating London, Paris and Rome. A traditional form of transport in Lisbon is the tram, they were introduced in the 19th century and imported from the USA. The distinctive yellow trams are one of the tourist icons of modern Lisbon. They are well suited to the steep hills and narrow streets. We are going on an organised trip to Obidos a picturesque village about 90 minutes away. We board the coach and make our way there. The guide tells us that she will be taking us to a little shop where we will be given a cherry liqueur in a chocolate cup. ... read more

Madeira is a beautiful island because, although volcanic in origin, it has a huge amount of rainfall in the mountains which makes it very fertile for all sorts of fruits and trees. Funchal, the capital, nestles in the southwest of the island and so has the best climate. Up in the hills there is a lovely Botanical Garden, which is worth a visit. It has wonderful ferns and other tropical plants from all over the world. This island has the perfect climate to grow anything. You can get there by cable car from the town if you don't have a car or coach. There is also a lovely church, Our Lady of Monte but you do have to climb quite a few steps to get to it. This is also the place where you can get ... read more

Rather than explore all of the wines and regions of Portugal, I will focus on the Douro Valley, home of the most famous Portuguese wine, port, and more recently some enticing red wines. In fact, my trip up to Porto from Lisob is designed to do just that. Focus on ports and red wine. Do not be alarmed if you know very little or nothing about Portuguese wine. I was the same way back in 2001 on my first trip here. My golf buddy and travel mate, Mr. Mike made sure I got a deep and informative introduction into Portuguese wines, particularly vintage ports. We spent most afternoons, after 18 holes of golf, tracking down vintage ports. The two names you may be familiar with are port (of course) and Vinho Verde. But Portugal has 14 ... read more

First some wine basics for the region: DOC (or DOP): DOC stands for Denominação de Origem Controlada and means the wine comes from a strictly defined geographical area with recommended and permitted grapes and maximum vine yields (to control quality). Technically there are 31 DOCs in Portugal, although 3 of them overlap, making it seem more like 28.... read more

Last day of our trip! We woke up early, gathered up everything and headed to the train station to ride in to Porto. Once we arrived, we met up with Ellie and Carey, as well as the tour organizer, who sent us on a train to Regua, where a guide would meet us. The scenery on the train ride was so beautiful! Once we got there, the guide Alex met us (as well as a couple from Switzerland that was on tour with us), and took us by mini van to the dock to head on a river cruise for an hour. Then we went for a drive to a beautiful viewpoint before heading to a winery for lunch and wine tasting. It was a 4 course meal, very good, and lots of wine. Our time ... read more

Here is the secret to eating in Portugal: Portugal’s cuisine has long resisted the encroachments of fusion or molecular gastronomy. Hearty to a fault, family-run restaurants churn out satisfying variants of bacalhau (salted cod), piri-piri chicken, and ultra-sweet cakes. Another reason, Portugal is relatively cheap, and we are told by travel experts and foodies to forget about counting calories here. Local wines are fairly priced, and very underrated. A word to the wise when dressing up for dinner: do not wear heels. Why? the hilly streets are steep, cobblestoned, and are known as "heel eaters" for lack of a better term. And dinner does not usuall... read more

Yesterday and today, we've spent checking out our little town. Yesterday was overcast but not rainy. We invited Ellie and Carey, who we had met on the train, to come for lunch. We went on a walk along the boardwalk, and then had stirfry at our apartment. Today, the sun was out, so we walked further north, all the way to where there's an old church out on the shore on a rock. When the tide is up, it's surrounded by water, it's not possible to get to it. When the tide is low, you can walk to it. We had a bit of a break at a little park near there, and then walked back. We went up to the rooftop for a final sunset. Tomorrow we're going into town, to get a tour out ... read more
