The city of Sintra is 18 miles northwest of Lisbon. It is inland and therefore has a sub-micro climate that can be entirely different from Lisbon. When we left Lisbon, it was a bright sunny day. Upon arriving in Sintra it was a cloudy cool day, still humid, but cool. The mountain top which is where the Moorish castle and the Pena Palace are located were actually fogged in. Pedro did advise that this is usually the case, but most days the fog will burn off so it was best to do the top of the mountain last. Sintra is on the slopes of the Serra de Sintra (Sintra Mountains) and has been inhabited in one form or the other since prehistoric times. The Moors were the first to build a castle and Sintra later became ... read more

I had every intention of getting up early and heading to both Sintra (45 min. away by train) and Belem (20 min. away in a different direction) today, but I dawdled, and didn't get out until 10am. By the time I got some food, took out some money from an ATM (it took going to 3 different locations until I was able to get some cash!), bought a train ticket (in the very busy train station) and got to Sintra, it was noon. Another 20 min. waiting for a bus, and a long, slow ride up a big hill, and I was finally at the Castelo Mouros. Things do not move quickly in Portugal!!! Castelo Mouros (Moorish Castle) was built around the 10th century. Obviously it's been restored in parts, but it was neat to see ... read more

For our 2nd day in Lisbon, we went to Sintra early morning. We talked about our plan to go there to our host and he kindly offered us to take us there in the morning, as he was only working in late afternoon on that day. This was great because he knew where to go and it was much quicker than bus!! For breakfast, we went to a pastry shop, which is famous in Sintra. We ate there a pastry called "travesseiros", which is made of sugar cane cream wrapped in pastry. I have to say that the 1st bite I thought ok that's really tasty but after some bites, it was really too "heavy" for me with all this sugar and butter. But, well, it was nice to taste it once. After breakfast, we walked ... read more

As promised much earlier we finally are getting the blog posting up from our side trip to Sintra when we were in Lisbon back in November 2012. Hard to believe it was that long ago, but in order to complete our journal for ourselves, we did want to be sure to include it- as they say, better late than never! For much of the summer Lisbon is a very hot and humid place. It was also the home of the Portuguese royal family. Then, just like now when the weather gets hot and unpleasant in the cities the rich find some place cool and pleasant to stay. In Lisbon that place was Sintra. It is only 35 km (22 miles) away from central Lisbon but there is a world of difference. Sintra is quite a bit ... read more

On the cruise up to Portugal we ran into some swells and 20ft waves. Or as Captain McNeill said: “We encountered the odd bump during the night.” Cruising into Lisbon is really neat. The long ride up the river to town passes many interesting and historical spots linked especially to the Voyages of Discovery where some of the greatest navigators left on their journeys around the world. We had a private car and went with Lani and Bert out into the countryside on our own discovery tour. We visited Estoril which is a famous beach town. Because of Portugal’s neutrality during WWII and the mild climate, Estoril was a place of great intrigue, filled with spies and royalty. The Casino there inspired Ian Fleming’s novel “Casino Royale.” From there we motored up the mountains to Sintra. ... read more

We are staying in a town which is about 40 minutes out of Lisbon. The town was a retreat for Portuguese Royals and the wealthy. This is an area of World Heritage sites. There are 4 Palaces and one extraordinary garden. We visited the Quinta da Regaleira which was great fun! The garden had tunnels which ended at the base of a well. Felt like a kid again! After following the tunnels past the back of waterfalls, you ended up at the base of a well. You then climbed a spiral staircase to the surface. Fantastic! There were also towers and winding paths. A giant adventure park! Today we visited a Moorish castle which runs along the ridge line. We could imagine how exciting a child would find it. Just needed a sword and armour! Views ... read more

Lisbon day 2 Today we had the chance to sleep in, all the way to 7:00 AM! We were heading today to some smaller towns around Lisbon. Our first stop this morning was the fishing village of Cascais. This small village is filled with small shops, restaurants and seaside sights. It is a resort town where the locals go to relax, especially on the weekend. We saw some of the major sights and then had some free time for shopping. We were able to buy some more Port Wine and enjoyed an espresso. Then back to the bus for the short ride to Sintra. Sintra was the summer palace of the King of Portugal. Here we were to tour the summer palace; however Cathy and I had been here before so we decided to shop the ... read more
