The next day we set out early because we have about three and a half hour drive to Porto, the second largest city in Portugal after Lisbon, with a stopover at Sintra, located just 40 km northwest of Lisbon. Sintra is famous for its fairytale 19th century Pena Palace and Park located in uneven terrain of Sintra mountain range. After passing the quaint little town of Sintra, the road becomes narrow and twisty. The vegetation in this vast forest is extremely lush and tree branches create a continuous natural canopy. The temperature outside is dropping slowly as we gain elevation. After we park our car at a designated parking lot, we hike up towards the Pena Palace and Park entrance. Perching majestically in one of the highest points, Pena palace exhibits a profusion of architectural styles ... read more

Hey Everyone! Portugal is HOT! I am enjoying fantastic amounts of heat in an air conditioned bus for travel, excellent! The trip here was quite a long one, we were up at 5am and arrived at 10pm. Begona and I are making this trip together and learning lots about personality traits and differences. Smiles. So, the food is excellent here in Portugal. We are staying at a 3*** hotel and great food, all meals served there or a picnic lunch. Sunday was a full day of travelling, yesterday we dia alot starting at 830am and ending at 830 pm. Wow. Quite a bit of walking and seeing the sites of Cascais, Sintra, Estoril and a couple places I am unsure of the names...I have it in my diary that is at the hotel. Cascais was a ... read more

Castelos dos Mouros is the remnants of the castle we explored today built by the Moors around the 9th century. It is part of the UNESCO world heritage site of Sintra on a mountaintop near Lisbon. Sintra also hosts Portugal's royal palace and other cultural and historic siites. The first hour of the hike up from the train stop at Sintra is steep narrow cobblestone switchbacks through the upper part of the town with lovely rooves, turrets and tiled walls - Women with spiky pumps navigating the steep cobblestones was simply bizzarre. Then it becomes a series of steep paths up to the Castle ruins. Simply unimagineably doing this in battle gear or carrying anything wiithout horses... Kim and the kids walked high above the ruins and stratospheres above Lisbon on the remaining ramparts. I battled ... read more

This is Tramp, Bill’s bicycle! Bill’s a bit tired this evening, so I’ve decided to take over the evening blog update. Let me tell you a bit about myself. I am a green (yeah, it ain’t easy being green), aluminum Cannondale, made in the USA. I’ve got 27 gears, and though I may not go fast, I can climb hills carrying nearly 50 pounds of Bill’s stuff -- tent, clothes, bike tools, even the computer this blog is being typed on.. When Gerri named her new white Cannondale Lady Liberty, or Lady for short, it seemed only appropriate for me to be The Tramp, ergo, “Lady and the Tramp.” (I knew you’d like that!) So I was christened. Today, Bill and I, and Gerri and Lady rode west from Paco De Arcos, Portugal, to Estoril ... read more

At this point, I must compliment my wife on her excellent planning. When we left our Tia Fernanda (hopefully allowing her to regain some semblance of calm and order after our invasion), we landed in Lisboa proper and into the waiting arms of the "This is Lisbon" hostel. I had wondered what Maria had been doing all those days before we left, hunched over in front of the computer and printing off pages to be inserted into the The Pink Book. Well, the Book became a light in the darkness, let me tell you. Me and the kids would be staring into the distance, likely whimpering or arguing, whilst Maria would be coordinating a) a solution to some unforseen problem or b) a delight to enjoy of which we could scarcely imagine. The "This is Lisbon" ... read more

We are now on an Urbano train service to Lisbon. Sintra was a lovely little town, situated 29km from Lisbon. Our accommodation was a salmon pink manor overlooking the historical centre. The owner of the manor was a nice (and a touch eclectic) man named Luis whom we suspected by the Portuguese brochures was a follower of the new age Baha’i religion, which is very refreshing and interesting and so he is probably a hippie at heart. So the manor overlooked a large (unkempt) yard with pool, Jacuzzi, pond etc. Oh and squawking birds too! Wednesday evening we ventured around town and of course the centre is packed with souvenir shops, mostly selling cork products such as (expensive) handbags, purses, postcards etc. I couldn’t believe how useful cork is (not just used as a stopper in ... read more

Its another beautiful fine day and we're going to explore the source of Portugal's famous port wine, the Douro Valley. On the way we are charmed by the town of Amarante, locals flowing out of the church as we enter the square. Its an idyllic spot with a sunny cafe, the river and old stone bridge, and the old church. Keith is happy to soak up the square's atmosphere, sitting near an accordian player while we explore the church. Pulling aside the thick red curtain we discover yet another delightful church interior, and in the adjoining courtyard a well-worn row of confessionals. I briefly consider taking the opportunity, but unfortunately the dimensions were not designed for wee frogs. We follow the Douro River up the valley. The steep hills have been extensively terraced to provide footholds ... read more

The day dawned as what I've come to believe is a typical winter day in this part of the world - overcast, occasionally drizzly, but warm (60s) unless the wind whips up. Matthew said that this would be a nice place to live simply because the temperatures are so moderate. That is its appealing aspect (although I still say I would choose Prague as a place to live, if I were to choose some non-Portland place). We wore our lighter jackets, more suitable for rain, hoped that the clouds would hold off on their forecasted showers for at least a few hours, and headed for the bus. We were told to take the 418 to Sintra, so that is what we did. It seemed a expensive (7e per person round trip) for a bus fare, but ... read more
