Last Thursday my comrades and I took the train to Lisbon, Portugal’s premiere city by the sea, capital, and San Francisco knock off—in the non-chronological sense, that is. We arrived early on Friday, and wandered groggily, taking stock of the immediate neighborhood surrounding or Residéncia. From our admittedly superficial investigations, it seems that that the city offers, in no particular order: 1) Public spaces wavering between extreme friendliness and unfriendliness to pedestrians—on one hand there are ample and monumental plazas and parks scattered about, as well as an almost pathological, though aesthetic, ordinance about paving sidewalks with white and black cobblestone. Moreover, the citizen public art (read vandalism) is highly evolved and often lovely. On the other hand, sidewalks are often non-existent or laughably narrow owing to massive and poorly managed public works, ... read more

So this past weekend I went to Lisbon, the capital of Portugal, here they call it Lisboa. There was a lot more to see there than I thought there was, and more complicated with the Portuguese language. It sounds nothing like Spanish, but many people spoke English. So after the 10 hour overnight train ride on Thursday night, we arrived in Lisboa, with an hour difference of Madrid, at 8:30 in the morning. We left our bags at the residencia but couldn't check in yet, so we went for breakfast and walked around the nearby park. After we checked into the hostel, we took a walk down to the main area, saw the Sao Roque Church and did a walking tour of the area. Then we shopped a little, but I didn't buy anything. Later that ... read more

Well, another weekend come and gone and another country visited! After an 8 hour bus ride from Madrid we arrived at 6am on Friday in the beautiful city of Lisbon. We took in the sites of the city in the wee hours of the morning, went shopping, and returned to our hostel for a siesta. We went to the castle and then had an early dinner because Friday night we decided to go to a Fado show. A Fado is a traditional song with cantante, Portugese guitar and classical guitar, it was very relaxing and fun! Afterwards we were going to go out but ending up falling asleep...which is also what happened on Saturday night. Satuday we decided to go to Sintra, a little town 45 min. outside Lisobon. It felt like summer with all the ... read more

Beginning of February I had to go to Lisbon on a business trip. I always try to plan my meetings at the end of the week so i can stay the weekend extra to go sightseeing or visit friends. Since it was a trip for work I was alone and Peter didn't come along with me. Kermit did and i showed him parts of the city of Lisbon! Thursday 2nd of February I arrived in the afternoon and headed to my hotel which was right in the center in the Chiado area. It was a very nice and comfortable hotel but unfortunatelly they didn't have any internet connection, so there wasn't much i could do online. Maybe on one hand good since i was forced to leave my hotel room and go do things. Since my ... read more

So the night train that i took to lisbon instead of madrid because i wanted to check out a few places here and it was pretty much the same price as it was to go to madrid. the train left at 930pm and got in at noon, cant say that it was as bad as the last few trains but cant say that i enjoyed it either. was all alone in my compartment until this creepy cult guy came in and started preaching to me about his cult and that i should get off with him in burgas instead of going to portugal. pretty much told him to "f off" sorry for the ... read more

Geo: 38.7072, -9.13552Hi all,Steve and I stumbled upon a web bar and low and behold... I am drinking a Leffe Brun and Stephen is having a Franziskaner. So we thought we would drop a quick note. Fado was amazing last night. Tried to party with the crazy all night partiers in Lisbon. Could only last until about 2am... things were just getting started. We are getting to old. :) Saw the castle and the Alfama today. Beautiful. Also went down to Belem. Bought snacky bits for the long ride tomorrow. Argh!!!Taking lots of pictures. We will upload some as soon as we find a place with accessible USB ports. I would like to apologize for poor spelling. I am trying to get all of these places right but it never looks the same when you type ... read more

Geo: 38.7072, -9.13552So we are here in Lisbon. Flight was fine. We have the tiniest hotel room with a tombstone for a bed. The redeeming factor is maize and blue tiles in the bathroom. Lisbon is more hilly than you can imagine. No wonder they have funniculars (public transport that takes you up the hills). We have been wandering the streets soaking it all in. Took the ferry across the river to see Cristo Rei (giant Christ the Redeemer as in Brasil) up close. He is very big. Went to a church that has a huge relic collection and lots of gold (and blue, even the saints are UM fans). Also popped into the Port Wine Institute for a tasting. We learned a bit about the different styles of Port. The tile work here is amazing, ... read more

We have been without internet for three days. A night in Sagres,in the Pousada dos Infantes, at the end of the world. A hike to the Forteleza on the point in the morning to stretch our legs and thunder showers follow us wherever we go. On to Evora, an historic walled city in the Alentejo. More rain, intermittent. Got to town, or rather the base of the hill, outside the walls, at commuter time. Once around a couple of circulos and up the hill following Herv's unfailing sense of direction and we were at the Lo'is Pousada. It's where the bones are stored. It's an old city with a wonderful aquaduct built in the 15th century, still standing and working. More rain. Tortoises in the atrium of the convent where we stay. Last night we stayed ... read more

The weather on Terceira and Ponta Delgada was changeable - warm, sunny and thunderous rain. We rode the public buses to see more of the islands and had some wonderful food watching the storms roll in from the south Atlantic. Great fish to eat at every meal and decent wines or beers. Green country aptly named. It seemed every home along the bus routes out of the cities had a plot of land, a cow, chickens or turkeys and corn. the bus was an important connection between the outlying towns and schools and shopping. Had we not feared for our lives during the thunder storms, there are ample walking trails all over the islands. ... read more
