WE LEFT VILA NOVA DA FOZ COA SOON AFTER BREAKFAST, AND JUST BEFORE A GROUP OF BIKERS, AND HEADED TOWARDS MONSANTO. EVEN THE MAIN HIGHWAYS IN THIS REGION GOES UP AND DOWN, A LOT! WE STOPPED AT BELMONTE, SINCE IT WAS ALONG THE WAY, AND ALSO HAD ITS OWN CASTLE, PLUS ONE OF THE LARGEST JEWISH COMMUNITIES FROM NEAR MEDIEVAL TIMES. WE CLIMBED A LITTLE UP INTO TOWN AND FOUND A PARKING SPOT PRETTY CLOSE TO THE CASTLE, ALTHOUGH STILL BELOW IT A BIT. WE WOUND OUR WAY UP TO IT AND ENTERED THE MAIN PORTAL TO DISCOVER TWO THINGS. FIRST OF ALL, THERE WAS NO ENTRY FEE, AND SECONDLY, APPARENTLY THEY WERE SETTING UP FOR A FESTIVAL, POSSIBLY ANOTHER MEDIEVAL ONE. UNFORTUNATELY, THEY WERE JUST STARTING TO SET UP, SO THE FESTIVAL WAS EITHER GOING ... read more

TODAY, OUR FIRST OBJECTIVE WAS TO VISIT THE PEGADAS DOS DINOSSAURIOS (DINOSAUR FOOTPRINTS) PARK. WE HEADED BACK UP THE ROAD WE'D COME IN FROM LISBON, THEN TURNED TOWARDS FATIMA AT MIRA DE AIRE. JUST BEFORE REACHING FATIMA, WE MADE THE TURN EAST TOWARDS THE PARK AND HAD LITTLE TROUBLE FINDING IT. AS BEFORE, BUSINESS WAS PRETTY SLOW AND WE WERE ABOUT THE ONLY TOURISTS THERE. THIS PARK HAS THE MOST EXTENSIVE GROUP OF PETRIFIED DINOSAUR PRINTS IN THE WORLD (FROM WHAT I READ), WITH SEVERAL SPECIES AND NUMEROUS "TRAILS" OF PRINTS. WE PAID OUR ENTRY FEE OF 3 EUROS EACH, AND AFTER A SHORT TREK UP HILL, AND AROUND THE EDGE OF THE "FLATS", WE DESCENDED DOWN TO THE FLATS. APPARENTLY, BACK IN THE DAYS OF DINOSAURS, THIS WAS A SORT OF TIDE POOL THAT THE ... read more

We packed up, checked out of the hostel and took the Metro from Pracoes stop to the Red Line, then on to Lisboa Oriente where we needed to pick up our rental car. The metro leg went smoothly enough and we easily located the Avis rental car office. They we had reservations, but we asked if we could pick it up a bit later so we wouldn't be so rushed to get back here from our last stop in Portugal, Monsantos. The guy said sure, no problem, you can pick it up as late as 1pm. So, we walked through the station and did some supermarket browsing, then on down to the oceanside. They has some really cool buildings from Lisbon's Expo, along with an oceanarium and a casino. After we walked along the ocean a ... read more

Today we are off for the holy site of Fatima, and the ancient towns of Obidos, and Sintra. Fatima is about 2 hrs north of Lisbon so we set our early for our destination. Andrew our guide is giving us good background on Portugal and we are enjoying his stories. As we pulled into Fatima, Andrew gave us quick orientation to the holy site and gave us time to explore. We started in the massive new church that seats 9000 pilgrims. This church is very modern and has a very cool architectural design. We stopped by the statue of Pope John Paul who loved Fatima, a chunk of the Berlin Wall ( one of Mary's promises was the downfall of Communism), and a picture of the three little children who received a vision of Mary. The main ... read more

Tomar Our stop for the night and for the next few days was to be the small town of Tomar founded in 1157 by the first grand master of the Order of the Templars Gualdim Pais. Upon entry to the town over the river the first thing that dominates is his castle on the hilltop above the town. The castle was built in the 12th century and also contains the Convento de Christo. We pulled in with trepidation to the municipal campsite right in the middle of the town not knowing what it would be like. Their own website had been poor giving us little factual information. Upon arriving it was like heaven. Reception friendly and helpful giving us maps of the town, pointing out the points of interest – the castle , the numerous churches, ... read more

We left the site at Porto fairly early in the morning with the intention of travelling 2 hours to Conimbriga the largest and most extensively excavated Roman site in Portugal which was on the Roman road between Lisbon (Olisipo) and Braga. Originally there was a Celtic site here. On the way we saw trees burnt the evidence of large scale fires this summer. The roads were empty as we sailed through with our Via Verdi box. Eucalyptus trees and olive groves replaced the wheat fields we had encountered so far. The site was quite difficult to find. Our sat nav directed us through the narrow streets of the town. Just wide enough for Suzy until we came to the roadworks and the way through closed. The local policeman was directing traffic around the town and he ... read more

Day 14 3rdSeptember 2013 Peuntenansa – Fuente De : Picos de Europa This morning we woke to a beautiful sunrise over the mountain, after enjoying the view for a little while we continued our journey through the windy roads to Picos de Europa (the national park). It was a lovely journey going through quant little villages. At times stopping due to cows being on the road and also old people walking up and down the mountain roads. When I say old I mean like very old retired grandmas and grandpas, who you would think could not walk without their walking frames but they were doing great, I think they would get up the road faster than me. We found the campsite which we had researched and booked in for two nights. The lady at reception spoke ... read more

We arrived at Baiona, it has two marinas, the first was Deportivo de Baiona and the second was the Club De Yates. We chose the wrong marina and berthed in the Deportivo Baiona marina……. I dealt with the miserable disinterested member of staff who took my money and shuffled back to the boat. I then went to have a shower which was a grotty porto cabin with grotty showers. Later we happened to go past the luxurious new facilities at the Club de Yates (cheaper than Deportivo) and could only look and yearn past the 24 hour security at the restaurant and café. I will know next time. Baiona itself was lovely and overshadowed by a fort which you can wander round. – Andy Baiona was very nice indeed despite the initial anxiety of ... read more

Had a minor set-back this morning, the first of the trip (I've been waiting for it). Happened when I accidentally got on the wrong bus out of Lisbon, one going South when I'm heading North. But I quickly realized my error, told the bus driver to kindly pull over as soon as possible, grabbed my luggage, hailed a cab, was rushed back to the bus station, boarded the right bus, and miraculously arrived in Fatima with no real damage done. I factored enough time into my schedule at Fatima that I actually left on the bus I wanted to in the afternoon. No harm no foul. This event, though, has made me think of many things, mainly about how travel is truly an odd combination of intense planning and calculation, almost down to your every step ... read more
