Friday was kind of an odd/funny day because it was the first day that we needed to find our own internet access because we couldn’t use the hotel’s wireless network anymore (we checked out on Thursday) and our appointment with Portugal Telecom to set up DSL in our apartment is not until next week. We need internet at least every weekday so Lindsay can do her translation work and so I can write about the mundane details of our lives (and a few interesting things) for this blog. We started our quest for an internet connection by going to the free internet café in the touristy part of town, but there wasn’t any way for Lindsay to connect with her own laptop and there was a 30 minute time limit to use their computers and a ... read more

I took some pictures of our apartment this morning. We haven’t really moved in yet, we’ll be doing that today, but we’re pretty happy with the layout of the apartment. There are 2 bedrooms, 1 bath, and a living room/kitchen combo room. Yesterday we bought a little TV (we get 1 Portuguese station right now) and a little FM radio/CD player (haven’t had time yet to check for stations.) I’m also uploading a few other pictures we’ve taken around Coimbra so far. - Jason ... read more

Well, we officially live in Portugal now! We got an apartment today that we’re really happy with, have already gotten cell phones, and have applied for bank accounts (which required a whole other set of minor administrative tasks that went surprisingly smoothly). We even went to Carrefour today and got stocked up with kitchen supplies and sheets and towels and stuff. Coimbra seems to be a fairly pleasant city, despite being kind of hot right now. We’re told that the heat will soon give way to months and months of cold, rainy weather, which actually sounds pretty nice right now. The people here have been really nice to us and almost everyone we’ve come across has spoken at least some English. People seem very willing to go out of their way to help the confused foreigners ... read more

We are planning on a trip to Fatima on Sunday and then I'll have some pictures to post from there. In the meantime here is a little info about this city.... Fatima became know in 1916 when Virgin Mary appeared to the 3 little shepherd children, Francisco, Jacinta and Lucia. In 1918 the then priest of Fatima asks that he be allowed to erect an alter where the apparitions took place. However Francisco dies in 1919, 15 days before the inauguration of the alter. In 1982 the actual cathedral is inaugurated with the visit of Pope John Paul II. Jacinta his sister dies on the 20th Feb. 1920 on the exact date that the Virgin had told her she would. Lucia died recently on the 13th Feb. 2005. Extra Info: 1st apparition - (May 13) 2nd ... read more

This is a perfect place to stay in if you want to get a good rest, yet be right in the middel of all the action. There are rooms with private baths or rooms without where the W.C. is just outside the corridor. All rooms have great big windows, some have a varanda, all have T.V (local only) and all have heating. The breakfast is all you can eat...coffee, tea, milk, hot chocolate, lovely bread, butter, sweet, cheese and ham. The ppl that own the B&B also have a restaurant on the same street and if you care to take meals there they offer a 3 euro discount. Visited Countries Map ... read more

We really aren't getting much time at each stop and the rain has put a literal damper on the exploring by foot. But, we are on our way to Coimbra in the north to stay at the Pousada in Condeixa de Nova. Road maps can be a great tool, but a comparision of the Hertz map and the Michelin map leads us to a gap in the road. Fall back and regroup over lunch before getting on the main north-south highway. Once we get to the off-ramp for Condeixa, things get interesting - this is where that habit of dropping part of the name from the road signs takes effect and after a hour stuck in traffic from a fender-bender on a two-lane road and a failure to connect a sign to Condeixa with the pousada ... read more

I don't know exactly why, but today I decided to start my own travel blog. Maybe it’s because my everyday more recurrent memory lapses made me think that I should put all my travels in written, somewhere, or maybe it’s just because I’m bored. Anyway, here goes nothing!! By the way… I’m not really sure I want to make this in English… well, we'll go along and see, so… sorry all you non-Portuguese speakers out there for all the Portuguese entries in the future. If you feel like asking for some translation… don’t be shy. _Dune ... read more
