So back to the story eh? I arrive at noon at Faro airport down on the south coast. Looks like Florida, but with roundabouts and french cars. I surprise Helenee from behind with Bom Dia, do the hug thing and go find Heleneê´s roommate, Stacia, who is borrowing a car to come get me. So how do they decide to introduce me to Portugal? SHOPPING! Brilliant. We end up at Faro Shopping Center after getting decidely lost. They go from store to store buying nothing while I sit under a palm tree hiding from the sun as much as possible as my SPF 50 sunblock should be used in moderation. Afterwards, Stacia as she said wanted to stop by her boyfriend´s place even though I felt it was quite obvious we were already going to be ... read more

Where do I begin, and where does it end! So few questions, so many answers. I concluded my stay in Dingle after all, and what a week. The blessed weather had reached Ireland, with clear skies, perfect temperatures...I ended up spending a week in the region afterwards hiking and doing whatnot. But it had to end, and Kerry county finally receded as I sat on the train to Dublin in a stupor that I was heading back to that city after being in Dingle Peninsula for such a time. I reached Dublin and headed southbound on another train to a place called Greystones where I was to meet Jenny, whose family was our neighbors some time back. Before I got out of the train station I noticed someone standing outside with a bike with searching eyes. ... read more

Untitled Well, this post is about a week and half later than I had hoped, but here it is. There have been some changes over here and the one that most of you have probably already heard about it that I have changed my look. The golden locks are gone!! We (Jenna, Kristi, Nina and I) decided to leave Spain during Semana Santa (Holy Week) and travel to Portugal. The southern coast or Algarve is mostly known for it beaches and surfing. I cut my hair the night before we left. It wasn't easy but it was definitely time for a change! Anyways, we left on Friday March 30 and arrived in Faro, where we rented a car and headed to our first stop of the week, Lagos. We stayed in a great hostel in Lagos, ... read more

Whether or not Lagos is actually on the Mediterranean is debatable since it's completely dependent on the direction of the current, but it felt like the perfect Mediterranean vacation. Thankfully, the sun and the temperature really decided to cooperate for the first time since we'd left Ireland, and we got a much-needed couple of days to relax on the beach. Lagos wouldn't be much without the beach traffic, but it's perfect if all you want to do is enjoy some beautiful scenery and read a book on the sand. The only thing we did that wasn't lounging related was to take a little boat tour further down the coast. I nice man who didn't speak any English took us out in his fishing boat and showed us the grottos along the shore. I've never had ... read more

4/15/07 Faro--Lagos We caught the bus, and after about two hours and thirty minutes of beautiful scenery we were in Lagos where we were picked up (It was so nice not to have to walk all over the place with our bags (we would have been walking for a while too, because it was fairly hard to find)), by one of the owners of the place we were staying at, and driven to the guesthouse (which was basically just an apartment in which we had one of the rooms). We got ready (which included putting on as much sunscreen as possible) and headed straight for the closest beach. The weather was so nice (it was about time we had a little sun this trip). We just sat right in the sand. I lasted for as long ... read more

Went shopping in Lisbon. Got some pants that fit Zac. Doesnºt happen often . Actually, neither does being in Lisbon. And Sof got some cool clothes. That does happen often. Well, the getting clothes part. I did write something cool here but Sof deleted it. Dammit. Dammit all the way to cool clothes heaven. Right, our holiday. Yes, clothes are cool in Lisbon. We had heaps of fun shopping and easily made a day of it. And the tile museum. THE TILE MUSEUM!!! WOW!!! HIghtlight of the trip for Sof.... so many tiles..... Zacºs highlight of the trip came a few hours later when we discovered the famous Belem custard tarts. He hasnt been the same since. Last weekend we got together with our American classmates for another road trip. This time we went to the Algarve region in southern Portugal, and also made a stop-off along the way in the town of Évora. We left Coimbra on Friday morning and arrived in Évora around lunch time. We had lunch near the main square in town and then made our way to one of the more famous (or infamous) sights in town, the Capela dos Ossos, or Bone Chapel. Lindsay and I had heard about this chapel a year ago from one of Lindsay’s classmates in Monterey (thanks Paco Loco!). The bone chapel is a small room attached to the Sao Francisco church and the walls are made of the bones and skulls of over 5,000 people. All things considered, the story behind ... read more

We entered Portugal to be greeted by a different landscape to that of Spain, whilst most of Spain was very dry, rocky, and sparse, Portugal was quite different with more rolling hills, green pastures and many farm animals. The southern coast of Portugal is an area known as the Algarve and is filled with little fishing villages and coastal resorts. We passed through several small towns before settling in to stay in Lagos, which I would imagine would be very pleasant in summer. It was by no means cold, even in December, but in summer due to the sea breezes it would not be as hot as some parts of Spain. There are some nice beaches in Lagos and loads of restaurants, it wouldn’t be a bad place to spend a week’s holiday in the warmer ... read more

You must forgive me for the length of time it has been since Ive written. Ive had a lot on my mind. West Side Story for example. The song "Maria" has been on replay in my head for the past four days. It all began in Granada, where we had a wonderful time hopping from one tapas bar to another with our fellow AC mates. We hiked up the Alhambra and played frisbee until the clouds burned off so that we could see the Sierra Nevadas (the OTHER Sierra Nevadas). I have recently learned that these are the only available ski slopes in all of Spain due to unusually warm temperatures this year. Thanks again, global warming. We decided to leave Granada and head for Lagos, Portugal to search for the last remaining rays of sun. ... read more

A Beautiful Sunny Day Ends Our Stay in Lagos More Grottos and Beaches Today we got up and decided to head back to the cliffs. Thanks to the rain on Friday we had ended our cliff experience about half way early, therefore; today was our day to finish that leg of our adventure. After the mile or so walk back to where we ended our last hike we started walking/climbing the trails along the cliffs. Shortly after out trail hiking started we found the precarious steps down to the little grotto that was a nude beach. We decided to head on down despite the possibility of nakedness. After about ten minutes we reached the bottom and thankfully there were no naked Brits lying about (they tend to be pasty and usually not the prettiest naked ... read more
