My Spot:No offense to Sheldon of Big Bang Theory; BUT this is MY SPOT! Many days if warm, I walk down hill 4-5 minutes and hang out in afternoon sun here on the cliffs east end of Albufeira or I go below to the beach area for an hour or two. New AirBnb: See the pics on my new AirBNB next door to the one I had. Nice balcony view! Much smaller place and queen bed in the living room but I can handle that. I have a nice round marble table for my laptop and to hang out with sea view through the sliding glass doors.. Wednesday 11-17 I took a couple hours walk to western Albufeira deep into hilly old town along the beautiful western cliffs and beaches complete with very old buildings, Big ... read more

More than 2 weeks after my arrival, initially as a tourist (Residency Visa in process), I am starting this blog to help track my journey. My goal is to find an area I like well enough to make my home base to live or take other new adventures into Europe and perhaps Morocco. I left Sarasota on October 29, arrived October 30 in Faro the largest city in the Algarve District which is the entire southern coast. A travel note for any future visitors: Faro may be cheaper to fly into than Lisbon plus you either take a bus, train or car which is at least 3 1/2 hours best case plus all the time/$$ to get started. A mini-van shuttle is available (airport to nearest hotel only) for $14 Euros to Albufeira via "Best4U" orange ... read more

From Albufera just a 5 euro bus ticket to Lagos. I left on Friday AM, a trip planned Thursday evening as the landlord informed me Thursday PM there would be no water for 1 day. (maybe 2). There were not many cheap last minute bookings so....In Lagos I stayed at a hostel which was very clean and I had a shared bath that was actually private as there were 5 bathrooms and only 4 people staying. Its off season and town was not crowded at all. The bus terminal was directly across from the marina a key place t visit and only a 10 minute walk through old town to my hostel. Most boat tours of the cliffs and rocky coast and caves were shutting down. I decided not to take a boat tour but reserve ... read more

We took a shuttle to Albufeira today to our next apartment. The company was a bit of a pain as they wouldn’t let us check in early, charged 3% fee for absolutely NOTHING even on the deposit. The apartment was large, 3 bedrooms and a balcony overlooking the old town. However, the new thing for these Airbnb companies is to buy up real estate and start renting them out as self-catered flats. Essentially charging an arm and leg for apartments with nothing in them but furniture. No salt and pepper, no toilet paper (except for rolls in place), no hand soap, no dish soap, no dishwasher soap. It is frustrating as you have to buy a months worth of stuff for a few days rental. It is frustrating to renters ( or at least us, who ... read more

The massive seagulls are again causing mayhem at breakfast. One of them has hoed into someone's leftovers on a nearby table and there's now broken crockery and glassware all over the paving. Issy decides to have a domestic morning, so I set off in the car for Praia de Falesia beach, which is about five kilometres east of Santa Eulalia. I take some happy snaps from the tops of the cliffs. There are again signs everywhere warning that they're unstable and to stay well back away from the edge. They look stable enough to me, so I walk right up to the lip to get the best possible vantage point. As I lean forward I realise that I'm standing on an overhang of soft loose dirt; the real cliff face is about a metre behind me. ... read more

The seagulls here are massive. One of them‘s taken a liking to some leftover breakfast on the next table, and it‘s threatening to cause some serious damage to the crockery. Another one’s set up shop on top of our umbrella. It looks even more massive in silhouette. I hope they're friendly. I think I'd give up quickly if one of them wanted to fight me for a piece of toast. We take the long hike into Albufeira. We pass a bar with signs outside it with a long list of English Premier League soccer matches that they'll be showing there over the next few days. An Englishman sees me looking at it and asks me which ones I'm planning to watch. When I tell him we're from Oz he says that we probably prefer Aussie Rules, ... read more

We sleep in and miss breakfast. The channels that our TV's been tuned into suggest that our hosts think we're Dutch. We settle in to watch a few minutes of "How I Met Your Mother". All the dialogue's been overdubbed, but the canned laughter seems to be the original. We've got very little idea what's going on, but we get the giggles watching familiar faces speaking a very unfamiliar language in equally unfamiliar voices. We wander through the hotel and try to get down onto the beach. Security's intense; all the doors and gates are locked. It feels like we're in jail, only with lots of swimming pools, bars and restaurants. Actually I suspect this is not really how it feels like to be in jail. It seems that we need to use our room key ... read more

I sleep restlessly. I spend a lot of the dark hours thinking about how I'm going to explain to the man at the rental car office how a concrete wall managed to run into the back of our car. Issy says there's only damage to the paint work, but I'm sure the rental car company will take a different view. The term "write off" is the one that most frequently comes to mind. We set off towards Barcelona. The snow that had magically appeared yesterday morning and then just as magically disappeared within a couple of hours has now reappeared. At least we think it's reappeared; we're now finding it a bit hard to distinguish snow from clouds. It wasn't at all difficult yesterday when the sun was shining and the sky was all blue. I'm ... read more

This blog will be limited in narrative but focus on photographs. After the cauldron that was Sevilla at 45°c, arriving in Portugal's magnetic Algarve via a three hour coach ride and a hair-raising taxi ride to the Vila Gale Atlantico resort, ten minutes from Albufeira, we settled in to our top floor suite. A gentle breeze swept across our south-facing veranda as we looked down on orange coloured clay roofs covering the typically whitewashed homes below, most of them clearly high-end. We were mere minutes walk to the beach and an excellent supermarket. Our plans were to relax totally while leisurely taking in the joys of the Algarve and it's decidedly slower pace before heading north as far as the exciting and incredibly attractive city of Porto and later the capital, Lisboa (Lisbon) and much more ... read more
