Took a tour recommended by Ola - thank you Ola. The tour was excellent and our guide was wonderful. Konrad, apx. 75, was a child during Nazi occupation and a young man when the Russians occupied Poland so he has seen it all. He had some interesting stories to tell. Monument to the Fallen Shipyard Workers by the gate to Gdansk Shipyard. The right to put up this memorial was one of the main demands (the main was Solidarity Union) during the 1980 lock-in and despite many difficulties the monument was ready for the 10th anniversary of 1970 uprising. These 42-metre high, steel crosses commemorate those who died in Poland's three uprisings against Soviet communism (1956, 1968, 1970) and the three first workers who were killed at this place on 16th December 1970. Recent historical sources say about over thousand people wounded, 42 killed, 3,000 arrested in December 1970.
