Today began with a morning sightseeing tour of Wrocław with a local guide. The group boarded our motorcoach over on Nowy Świat, along the Odra River. (Coaches are not allowed along Kiełbaśnicza where the hotel was located. I liked that name--Kielbasa Street!) The coach drove us over to the Exhibition Grounds. Pomnik Aleksandra hr. Fredry - Monument to Aleksander Fredro - (Polish playwright, 1793-1876). Originally installed in Lwów (now Lviv, Ukraine) in 1876. Reinstalled in Wrocław Market Square (Rynek) in 1956 in place of the former equestrian statue of Friedrich Wilhelm III. DSC_0990

House of the Seven Electors

Kamienica "Pod Siedmioma Elektorami" - House of the Seven Electors. Townhouse built in the 15th century. Rebuilt in the Baroque style in the 1670s. It was then that the famous exterior frescoes depicting Emperor Leopold I and the seven electors of the Hapsburg Empire were added. Restored in 1990. Note the ornate doorway. Rynek 8. "On the W. side is the house (No. 8) once occupied by the Bohemian kings, built about 1500; the frescoes (1672) representing the Emperor and the seven Electors were restored in 1865".--Baedeker 1910. Kamienica Pod Gryfami - House under the Griffins. Built in 1587-1589. Particularly notable, with a Mannerist gable roof, the most impressive in the Market Square. Rynek 2/3. DSC_1007

Jaś and Małgosia

Jaś and Małgosia (Hansel and Gretel) - two medieval tenements at the north-western corner of the Wrocław Market Square, connected with each other by an archway. Built most probably in the fifteenth century, they were then part of a larger group of dependencies of the parish church (St. Elizabeth). The archway was rebuilt in the Baroque style in 1728-1740. Bazylika św. Elżbiety Węgierskiej - St. Elizabeth's Church. Tower completed in the mid-15th century and rebuilt in 1531-1535. The tower is 300 feet (91.5 m). Construction of the current Gothic church was supported by Bolesław III in the early 14th century. Built in 1309-1387. A Lutheran Church from 1542 to 1946 and then a Catholic church. Rebuilt in the 1980s. "...Church of St. Elizabeth, to the N.W. of the Ring, founded about 1245 and largely rebuilt at the end of the following century, has a tower 300 ft. in height (1452-56) and three choirs".--Baedeker 1913. Liebich Hill, now Wzgórze Partyzantów (Partisan's Hill). The colonnade, built in 1867 was a restaurant before World War I. It was once surmounted by a pavilion. The lower colonnade was later enclosed and became a dance hall and disco (Klub Reduta). "...the modern belvedere called the Liebichs-Höhe, which commands an admirable survey of the town and its environs".--Baedeker 1910. DSC_1062p1
