So. A friend of mine, Magda, from my heady days of 'studying' in Holland said she might come and meet me while im in Berlin. For work related reasons, she couldnt make it, but she did invite me to come and visit her in Poland (mostly to show off her new place i think). So soon after we repaired the bikes in Berlin we went to the central train station in Berlin (HBF) and i looked up and bought tickets (with very little time to spare). All three of us ran downstairs to sample some local cuisine (the McRib and two Big Macs). While in the cue a german girl randomly came up to us saying hi and asking us about Ireland (the accents stand out im told) and she also ate with us. She was admittedly a very pretty girl. She also looked older than she was. Ive never seen Conor so dissapointed. She stayed with us so much that she missed her train. So she said goodbye and ran off to catch another train. We finished up and, well due to time constraints, i did not head back to the hostel to get my stuff. This was a mistake.
I hopped on the S Bahn to get to the station my train was leaving from and hopped on that train upon getting there.
In the meantime, i understand Conor and Enda were busy losing first Enda's glasses, and then Enda's phone. Between bike chains and losing things, i think Berlin is actually against us.
About an hour into my train journey i realised it was not going to take 1 hour 46 minutes, but in fact it was going to take 3 hours 50 minutes. I am a giant idiot.
So i was stuck in a 6 berth cabin with five women who cant speak English. Even for a talker like me, this is a challenge. One to which i did not rise. I basically dosed off, bored out of my tree due to the fact i didnt bring books, headphones or a charger for my phone. MISTAKE. I was looking forward to getting to see Magda, but four hours passes slowly despite any amount of looking forward to seeing her :-)
I get to Poznan in Poland at 1.45 in the morning (having left Berlin at 9.04) and Magda graciously picks me up
(for which i am hugely hugely grateful) and she instantly and quite rightly showed me her admittedly nice brand spanking new excellently decorated and in a good area of Poznan appartment, before we had a small chat and then headed for bed and the couch respectively. I slept for 12 hours non stop. I figure this will stand to me when i meet up with the lads again.
I woke up and spent the day on the couch watching tv, texting and writing this thing. Magda got home and we chatted some more, watched some Family Guy and went for a quick nap before heading to the train station to cap off my short side trip to Poland.
I was glad to see Poznan again, and while Magda offered to come to Berlin and even take a whole day off to see me, im happy i made the trip, happy i got to see her again, and happy she is doing so well :-)
She also made me a packed lunch which rocked. Her home cooking has, if anything, gotten better.
