I have decided that I really enjoy being on, and sleeping on, a ship! I had a very good sleep last night but was rudely woken by my alarm at 8am! After a slow start, I got up and showered and sorted out my bag, as I needed to be out of my cabin by 10. I headed down to Deck 4 in search of some breakfast - wow, that was crazy! I must have gone there in peak time, as it was hard to find a spot to sit. Eventually I bumped into Felicia and she had a seat at her table so I joined her. The food selection was great and I had porridge with dried fruits, nuts and yoghurt. Coffee was ok and also orange juice.
Back to my cabin and I finished packing and got my bag out on time. Then it was a matter of hanging around on the ship for the next 4+ hours until we docked in Bergen. I spent my time walking around the Deck 5 walking track while also taking in the amazing scenery along the way. Walking proved to be tricky at times, as the wind was almost gale force!
My walking (and being out on deck) ended when it started to rain - and I don't mean the light misty stuff that had been hanging around all morning, but the heavy rain that, thanks to the wind, made sure I got wet from every angle!
We pulled into Bergen at 2:30pm - wow, if the view from the ship was anything to go by, I am going to love this place. It is picture postcard beautiful! Well, all except for the rain - and the fact that apparently it rains in Bergen something like 240 days of the year! It was raining when we arrived so I guess today isn't not one of the other 100+ days. Once we had all disembarked, we were picked up by a mini bus and taken to our hotel (Hotel # 13). I think this is one of the niciest hotels I have ever stayed in! It is a boutique hotel and located right in the centre of the main shopping mall. It has amazing artwork and I also love the layout of the room.
As there were no further plans for the group, a few of us agreed to meet
up at 7pm to go out for dinner. I had volunteered to do some research to find a nice place to go, so after I had settled into my room, I headed out to explore. Bergen is a harbourside town and seafood seems to be the popular food here. I knew there was a fish market not far from the hotel and right on the harbour so I headed there first. It is amazing! There are all these stalls with a huge variety of seafood and other items (like reindeer) which you can pick and they then cook it up for you. I also checked TripAdvisor for suggestions and found two restaurants that I thought looked good, so at least I could give the group options. I then headed back to my delightful room at the hotel to work on my blog for a while.
I met Felicia, Jonathan, Cynthia and Sandy at reception and we headed off to the harbour. It was raining again - it had stopped between arriving at the hotel until now. I took them to the first place I recommended and they did like it but we decided to check out the second one.
This second one also had a micro-brewery and the food options seemed good so we decided to go here. So glad we did! Firstly we tried a beer paddle that contained each of the four beers they brew, so that we could then pick the one we liked best. Everyone found something they liked on the menu - I choose the moules and frites again! We all thoroughly enjoyed our meals and for one of the first times, the serves were quite generous! My mussels were the best I've had so far - they were more like the mussels we have in Australia (plump) rather than the little mussels you seem to be served in Europe. We really had a fun night and all enjoyed the location. By the time we walked back to the hotel it was raining quite heavily. Lucky I had my good jacket from SilverSeas as it kept me very dry!
