first trip abroadIN ENGLISH
Our first road trip takes us from London, UK to Amsterdam, Netherlands: 333.8 miles each way in 4 countries, 22-25 May 2009. We head off on a Friday night after work (central London) to the Channel Tunnel at Folkestone; a 20-minute cross over on the train and once in France we go to Dunkerque spend the night at Auntie Clemi.
Early departure the next day, and off we go for our very first road trip abroad. It's a nice day, and the weather forecast is optimistic throughout. A bit of motorway and soon we are in Belgium riding towards Brugge.
On the way to Amsterdam, we decide to take more scenic routes, so in Brugge we come off the motorway and head north to the bridge crossing that will get us to Zeeland, Netherlands. From here it is a pleasant ride on smaller roads with one objective: the windmills!
Mindmills are found all over Holland. The most convenient area for us is near Nijmegen. There, off a small village, we take pleasure walking along a canal bordered on each side by rows of windmills. Lovely sight! After a few touristic picture snaps, we get back on

crossing to Zeeland Suzie and continue our journey to Amsterdam. There is still quite a distance to cover!
We rejoin the motorway and ride on at speed to our final destination. We are going to stay two nights in Amsterdam. We did not think it necessary to book a hotel room in advance - well how wrong we were! The city is absolutely packed and every hotel we enquire within, we are being told it's fully booked. Oh dear, it is by now getting a bit late at night. Finally, after being turned away once more, the receptionist kindly call another hotel for us and lucky us, there are availabilities there! But where is the damn place? Amsterdam city centre is a maze of one way streets and pedestrian areas; we ride on in circle for an hour looking for the hotel. Last measure: I get off the bike, hell a taxi and tell the driver to take me to the hotel while John follows the car by bike!
The hotel is fine, on the edge of the red light district. By this time, all that matters to us is a bed to crash out!
We spend the next day, Sunday,

bridge crossing to Zeeland sightseeing in Amsterdam: canal boat trip, park, red light district and so on. We had a lovely time.
Monday is the day of the return journey. No stop over this time, straight to England on the motorday. It is scorching weather and we certainly suffer from the heat wearing our full bike gears. The camel backpack - xmas gift from Vincent & Marilyne - was really really useful. Thanks guys 😱
EN FRANCAIS
Notre premier voyage est a destination d'Amsterdam, Hollande au depart de Londres, RU: 537.2 km a l'aller, 4 pays, du 22 au 25 mai 2009. Nous prenons la route un vendredi soir apres le travail (au centre de Londres) vers le tunnel sous la Manche a Folkestone; traversee de 20 minute dans le train et une fois en France nous allons a Dunkerque passer la nuit chez Tatie Clemi.
Depart tot le lendemain matin, and nous voila en route pour notre premier voyage en moto a l'etranger. Il fait beau et la meteo s'annonce optimistique pour le reste du weekend. Un peu d'autoroute et bientot nous sommes en Belgique, direction Brugge.
Pour ce voyage a Amsterdam, nous decidons de prendre les routes secondaires,

crossing to Zeeland donc a Brugge nous quittons l'autoroute et nous dirigeons au nord sur le point de passage a l'ile Zeeland en Hollande. De la, la conduite sur les petites routes est tres agreable et nous n'avons qu'un objectif: les moulins !
On trouve des moulins un peu partout en Hollande. La region l'a plus adequate a visiter pour nous est pres de Nijmegen. La, aux abords d'un petit village, nous avons plaisir a marcher au bord d'un canal border sur chaque rive de moulins. Tres joli ! Apres avoir poses pour les photos tourisques traditionnelles, on remonte sur Suzie et continuons nous route vers Amsterdam. Il y a encore pas mal de kilometres a faire !
Afin de gagner du temps nous rejoignons l'autoroute vers notre destination finale. Nous resterons deux nuits a Amsterdam. On n'a pas pense necessaire de reserver l'hotel a l'avance - quelle belle erreur ! La ville est bondee de monde et tous les hotels nous disent qu'ils sont complets. Bon sang, on ne va quand meme pas faire demi-tour maintenant surtout qu'il commence a se faire un peu tard ! Finallement, une receptioniste fait l'effort d'appeler un hotel confrere et nous trouve une chambre libre.

crossing to Zeeland Mais ou ce trouve ce satane hotel ? Le centre ville d'Amsterdam est une successsion de rue a sens unique ou voies pietonnes; on tourne en rond depuis une heure. Une idee: je descends de la moto, prends un taxi, le chauffeur m'amene a l'hotel et John suit la voiture derriere en moto !
L'hotel est tres bien, a l'entree du quartier chaud. On s'en fiche, tout ce qui nous importe est un lit pour dormir !
Nous passons le lendemain, dimanche, a visiter Amsterdam: mini croisiere sur les canaux, quartier de l'industrie du sexe, etc. Nous avons passe un excellent sejour.
Lundi est le jour du retour a la maison. Pas d'arret en route, direct vers l'Angleterre par l'autoroute. Il fait un soleil torride et on souffre de la chaleur dans nos vetements rambourres de motards. Le sac a dos gourde - cadeau de noel de Vincent et Marilyne - nous a ete tres tres utile. Merci la famil' 😱
