The maiden adventure abroad
The rig is ready for its first ferry from Hull to Rotterdam Well it’s Mobile Explorer’s first trip abroad and it started okay - well okay ish as Mike was driving and he nearly killed us twice and I had lots of adrenalin going through my veins when passing large lorries - how the hell am I going to cope being driven on the wrong side of the road with Mike driving on the wrong side of the van - oh no will I make it a alive!!!
So we get to the P&O ferry at Hull and although I have been reading up about you are not allowed to take any dairy, meat and vegetables if I am honest I had packed them this morning and then thought better of it as I am sure Holland, or as it is now called, the Netherlands has supermarkets! Am I glad I did take the stuff out as you guessed it a man from security comes onto the van and checks the fridge - thank goodness I did not do my normal thing and think they won’t come and have a look. Not only the fridge they also checked the toilet so I think they were thinking we could be smuggling refugees out
Our setup on site
With our own toilet and shower block - amazing of the UK - seems strange to me.
So we are now in the cabin and its really nice - I do not know what I thought it would be like. So we go to the restaurant and have a meal which again was not too bad and then went back to the cabin for a snooze. Up early in the morning as we are not sure if our clocks would change but really did not need to as they put a message over the tannoy telling you the restaurants are open for breakfast. Breakkie was okay apart from my poached eggs which were snotty and no one likes a snotty egg!!!!!!!!!
Now the fun begins as we now needed to get to the campsite. Now I am a real fan of using maps. I do not mind a Sat Nav for the final part of a journey which is the total opposite from Mike - who likes a Sat Nav from the beginning.
So we get out of the port and you guessed it we went wrong and this would not be the first time using the Sat Nav as the roads in Holland oops Netherlands are really good but the junctions come up really fast on you. When you follow the sat nav and not look at the road signs you always seem to take the wrong turning. We heard re-calculating so many times at one stage I thought the Sat Nav lady was going to say unless you follow my directions I am giving up. Anyway, I just lost the plot and got the trusty map out and guess what we did not go wrong from then on!!
We found a great little co-op in Denekamp so we could stock up on food and drink as, you guessed it right, we had nothing apart from rice and beans - now I am not saying anything is wrong with rice and beans but it really does not float my boat. Not only that we found all our cards were declined so thank goodness we have some cash but need to sort this out asap
So we got to the campsite and Mike is still in one piece as I have not killed him yet, ha ha and I had to say ”when I drive are you going to be as good a navigator as me” - you can all imagine the look on Mike’s face - hey ho we are not divorced yet!!!!!!
The campsite is really nice and we have our own shower block, toilet, fridge and sink with hot water. Me thinks that UK sites should look at this. We met up with Andrew and Joan who had already arrived the day before and also Andrew and Joan’s friends Barry and Chris. We all went for a beer as there is a bar on the campsite. Then back for a BBQ and we are camping - well I suppose not quite camping as it is a bit luxurious having heating on etc
