Even though a road trip from Groningen to Leeuwarden would take about 45 minutes it is a much slower and longer trip via canal (and I am pretty confident in saying a more pleasant trip!) The canal that we had to take took us northwest to Zoutcamp, then we continued on to the Lauwersmeer (large lake with access to the sea) where we started turning southwest. This led us to an overnight stop in Dokkum. This portion of the canal again took us through plenty of farm land as well as through fishing areas which we have to always watch for no matter where we travel. We saw many more commercial fishing boats when on the Lauwersmeer with its direct access to the sea. As there is quite a distance between towns in this stretch of ... read more

It’s all in the translation…which may mean it is lost….and when in doubt Google. We ended the last blog on the optimistic note that some poor people had to go back to school and work this week – that of course was ridiculous. How can children exist without 6 weeks off in the summer? There we were in a new harbour when we are introduced to Mickey, a ginger and white cat who lives on a tiny ie about 16ft long boat, Slobby, with his 2 owners on their 3 week annual holiday. He normally lives in an apartment in Friesland so seems to quite enjoy the freedom a lead gives him when boating. The guy mentioned that he had to go back to work this week and we said knowledgeably, oh yes Friesland have had ... read more

So back to Sneek to where Isabela will spend her real summer without us, a little tiny marina attached to a boat building company called Brandsma – they build Vlets like ours but unlike Smelne have been building all through the recession. We knew that a fellow sister ship who had lived at Brandsma for about 6 years so we thought it was a good place to find out about and Isabela was warmly received so we hope it will be good. Our friends arrived, this time by car which poses its own challenges – where to leave a car and the necessity of retuning to pick it up. Luckily Brandsma were very happy to oblige. We had concluded that further escape was necessary from the crowds around the Sneekermeer so we had planned a little ... read more

Our friends duly arrived dead on time having managed all the connections from Schipol with aplomb. The next day dawned grey, windy and cold but the wind was from the South and we were going due North so we decided to put our nose out into the Ijsselmeer, see what it was like and decide whether it would be Medemblik on the West side or Stavoren on the East where we really wanted to go in order to get into Friesland and specifically Sneekermeer. We always try to give our friends albeit a small but varied cameo of Holland and so we were aiming for some town moorings and some island moorings. So we went for it….and 2 hours later, after a rather bumpy and surfing crossing we entered into the peace of the inland canal ... read more

doing a few family rounds.. (we still had a few people to visit, and it was my cousins birthday today!) DAY SIXTEEN: we woke up earlier than usual because we had a few people do visit in Friesland, dad wanted to visit his aunty whilst still in Holland and he'd planned today to do so. The plan was to be there at 11:00, so that we could have lunch there and hang around for a bit. Unfortunately, a lot of us slept in.. so we pushed it to about 11:30. Which i suppose could be a lot worse now that i think of it. We arrived there and to my surprise, were a lot more people than i expected. Also attending the lunch was 5 of dads cousins. We arrived there with and said hello to ... read more

Our 1st week back in Europe 29 May 2014 - Northern Holland After a wonderful 10 days on the National Geographic Orion ship and exploration ship cruising from Darwin to Broome in Australia, we spent 5 days with our son Adam. It was so good to be with him. We then left for Amsterdam on 27 May and arrived on 28 May with Emeritus Airlines with a 3 hour stopover in Dubai. We arrived in Amsterdam at 1.00pm their time after 18 hours total, in the air. We then hopped straight on the train to Utrecht, an easy transition. I had been communicating through Facebook, with my cousin Mary Bampton (nee Walsh) who, with her husband, was travelling through Europe. They were staying in Amsterdam and so they caught a train to Utrecht and met us ... read more

Vlieland is one of the West Frisian Islands off the coast of northern Netherlands. This island is a combination of sand dunes, wooded areas and meadows. There is only one village on the island, Oost-Vlieland as the second village was lost to the sea in 1736. We had been told by many that this was a nice island to explore – it had plenty of hiking and biking trails and very little traffic as only the residence are allowed to have cars. All tourists that come by ferry must either walk or bicycle or take a taxi (very few of them). The ferry has an excellent system for taking everyone’s baggage into carriers (similar to what you see at airports) and then it is transported to the various hotels and campgrounds for the people. When ... read more

What a day. 8:30am departure, good job. I was eyeing a bakery in the neighborhood corner. I think we have time to sit down for a cup of coffee and food. According to my homework, we should be taking 9:40 train to be in Wierum by 1pm. This will give us ample margin for missed train and what not, and ensure that we make 3pm mud walk meeting time. Except! Food didn't come until 9! Vinh’s quiche and my homemade jam with biscuit were of quality - fitting for their high-tea offering in the afternoon. Unfortunately, we had to go. We also had to make a quick stop at a supermarket for the road and 4-hr mud walk. Adding to a tiny pressure of time of because of it, train station just couldn’t be found. It ... read more

Well, it has been a month since i've written a blog entry and that is quite surprising. Days are going by so fast! I can't believe I have already been here for a month! Here is a recap of the past few weeks: My second week in Holland I spent at Dutch Orientation Course (DOC) in Boxtel where I met 20 other exchange students from USA, Canada, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, and Taiwan. During this week we had lessons on the Dutch language, and also had plenty of time to bond. We went to a dutch carnival (kermis), Den Bosch, museums, and even visited the Boxtel Rotary club. My roommate during the DOC week was Jillian and by the end, we were crying because we didn't want to leave eachother. Our host family (Marc, Els, Tom, and ... read more

I did not even realize i had published a blank Entry Two so I am sorry about that. I have been in Burgum, Friesland for five days now and I love everything about it. I am staying with the Kingma family and they are the nicest people I have ever met. When my sponsor Rotary club told me the Dutch are the happiest people in the world I didn't think too much of it until I actually got here. It is completely true, they are so kind and caring. Some things i have experienced in the past few days: Mosquitoes are terrible bugs and apparently they just can't get enough of me. I now have to wear bug repellant to bed, protective clothing, keep my window closed (trapping the heat in my room!), use a plug-in ... read more
