Monaco is divine. The views are breathtaking and no photo does it justice as the perspective is lost. So write it down on your 'bucket list'
As expected all the top makes of cars are parked everywhere, real estate costs several fortunes to buy and you must live there for a certain time of the year. Athough it is believed maids come and open and close curtains, turn on lights to pretend ccupants are there. I want this job !!
The heavens opened up on us as we arrived at the Palace of Monaco which is perched on a rock and quite a fortress. But being an intrepid tourist by now up went the brolly and on I went. 😞 We still got drenched and took shelter in the Cathedral. This is where Grace Kelly married her Prince and became somewhat immortal for this fairy tale romance. The Cathedral is lovely and we were able to see their graves, side by side and the floral tributes which arrive each Sunday.
Lou and I took a separate route back to the bus and discovered a small toilet block amongst a lovely garden. Off came our tops to dry under the hand dryers
and I fully expected to be arrested for public indecency by the Palace Guards !! It was funny and we got away with our crime SHHHH !!
On we went hugging the coast road towards Florence, Italy. The border is in one of the many tunnels and I can tell you that there are 168 and a half tunnels along this route. It is unusual as you are plunged into darkness and out again into the bright daylight time and time again. Genoa hugs the coastline here and it's suburbs are nestled between the mountains time and time again. Think of the old black and white flickering movies to understand the experience. In due course I'll post up a video but this will be upon arriving home. On the way we took a chance to visit Pisa. The rain had followed us. It was a very quick photo stop to view this world famous water tower.
A short time afterwards we arrive in Firenze (Florence). Joined by coach friend's Di and her mother Eunice and Marge we toured the squares. Here we found the Replica statue of David (original is in museum but time madew a visit into impossible. )
the church where Michaelangelo is buried, the ancient Pont D' Vecchio and market stalls. We were on a mission to find one particular market stall beloinging to an elderly lady who, using a treadle sewing machine, embroiders your name onto aprons, oven mits, bibs etc, This was specifically a gift Di wanted to buy in Europe. So it became an obesssion of ours. Dashing about to find here was exhilarating in a strange way. And my determined ( ok, stubborn) personality trait kicked in big time as I saw Di tripping over her lower lip in disappointment. Then wonder upon wonder WE FOUND HER !! Di and I literally jumped up and down in delight ! I had to buy one in celebration of finding a small area 4x3 metres in an entire foreign city without even a map or language skills !!
