So as it would be too difficult to recap the happenings of the last two months of my travels, the following few entries are mostly photo galleries to give a glimpse of what I have been up to. ... read more

We discovered today that ever since we entered Lithuania we have been living out of sync with the rest of the nation, by one hour that is. Finally it dawned on me today as a big digital clock in a town suggested that the time was exactly one hour later than what I presumed it was. Funny indeed, as for over a week we had been going around indignant that shop keepers would shut their shops one hour early (just for the sake of it obviously), and that buses did not behave according to their timetables. It had even gone so far that I was complaining it was getting dark early at night, was light too early, and why didn’t they put their clocks one hour forward? Well they did, it was just us who didn’t! ... read more

Day 11 of our journey, and the legs are starting to feel tired. A good thing that the road out of Druskininkai is absolutely perfect: sheltered from the wind, flat, and the sun is not too hot. On our way out of Druskininkai, we get lost once again (as we did on the way out of pretty much every single larger town). Two Lithuanian women, dressed up in their fancy car, offer to not only help us find the way, but drive with us to make sure we find it. Once they made sure we found the right junction, we have a little chat with them and they are quite interested in our journey (they speak perfect English). Once back on the way and well out of the town, we notice that (a) not every small ... read more

The last (half) day in Poland! Apparently, our tent was hidden well enough as nobody found us (or was bothered with us being where we were). As usual, we start the day off with some coffee, where I almost manage to set fire to the forest floor because I spill some cooking spirit. We get on our way towards Lithuania. As if someone was trying to keep us from reaching the border, the headwind picks up and makes cycling a real pain. Traffic is perfect though, not even the Nr. 16 route people warned me of manages to come up with much in the way of traffic. Generally, everything seems like it's asleep. It is Sunday morning after all, and we're in a pretty religious part of Europe. On the other side: Lithuania. A new country ... read more

During the last weekend i went to Kaunas. Kaunas is a 400.000 inhabitant city in Lithuania, about 100 Km away from Vilnius. After a small tour of the city we went we went to a small restaurant and got some Lithuanian traditional food and beer, the food consists from boiled meat covered in boiled potatoes, and the beer was “alive” beer. The city itself consists from 2 sides, the old city and the new city, both of them very beautiful. The nice part of this trip is that I met the AIESECers there and went to a party, to be honest I kind of missed a good party during the last month, so I really enjoyed this one. Besides party and sightseeing there were 2 days of work and getting to know the reality of AIESEC ... read more

It is clear that we are a battered team at this moment, only two days into the Lithuanian Championship. I strained a muscle in my right shoulder sliding back into first on Saturday; right now I am wearing a brace and the doctor has told me to not play for at least one week. I was at practice, though throwing and running a bit. Marijus Dargus was back at practice even though he is recovering from knee surgery and cannot do anything more than walk. He apparently called Sigitas immediately after he heard about our devastating 22-5 loss saying that he would be ready to pitch the following week. He was out at practice on monday (it was the 13-15 year old practice, not even our team) throwing to hitters. We learned that over the ... read more

Last year I wrote about the great Lithuanian baseball tradition (in fact Kaunas baseball tradition) that if you hit a home run you are obliged to buy beers for the whole team. I commented initially that this was an incredible tradition, but a rather expensive one for the few players who most often hit the home runs. On our first day of games last weekend Aivaras hit the first homerun of the Lithuanian championship. And I learned that in fact this year the team has changed the tradition because some guys complained about having to always buy the beers after games last year. The new tradition, more along the lines of what we do in the US, is that the team buys drinks and dinner for the home run hitter after the game. ... read more

I continue to learn more and more about baseball here in Lithuania. Last Sunday at the games in Utena I was playing first base when a ball was hit to the shortstop, who threw a wild throw to first wide to the right. I went to catch the throw and was toppled over by the Utena runner as he ran past first base. I tumbled once and landed on my feet, and impulsively said ‘Aziprasau,’ (sorry). The Utena guy said ‘hey man, sorry ‘bout that, you alright?’ And I said ‘you’re not Lithuanian.’ ‘Nope,’ he said. So how did I go a full season in Lithuania last year, playing in Utena numerous times never having met this other American playing baseball in Lithuania? As he stood on first, we began to chat. I learned a ... read more
