Colosseum
The Colosseum Today was another long day in the coach. We dropped off Thierry at one of the Contiki campsites and picked up a new driver. Apparently they have rules about how many hours straight drivers can drive (Paul tried telling us that Thierry had been banned from driving in Rome because he had went off road and driven circles around the Colosseum). It makes sense, I suppose. So we dropped Thierry off and picked up our new driver, Charlie. He reminds me of a little Leprechaun! He’s so cute! Ha ha. He started off badly, because we got stuck in horrific traffic. Uggh! We ended up having to take a back route into Rome, which definitely was not a short cut! Instead of arriving around 3 like we had originally planned, we didn’t even get there until 5pm! Booo!
When we got there, we got the abbreviated version of “Paul’s Illegal Walking Tour of Rome.” In Rome (and I think all of Italy), you cannot give a tour unless you are Italian. We got the full tour, but it was just done at a much faster pace than normal! We started at the Pantheon, and continued through a lot of amazing
Streets
The streets of Roma sites. We saw the Roman Forum, The Coliseum, The Trevi Fountain, and everything in between! At all of the major sites, there are tons of “gypsies.” Paul absolutely hates them (which you can’t blame him for…they did steal a ton of his money). He was hilarious, though, every time one would be anywhere near us, he’d yell “GYPSY!!!!” It was really amusing to watch their reactions! By the time we sprinted around to all the sites, it was time for dinner.
Tonight’s optional dinner was a buffet dinner of sandwiches, pasta, and lots of wine! It wasn’t the best meal, but it was food. I think the bartender tried to get me wasted. I had the most amazing strawberry vodka. And I drank it straight. It wasn’t like our vodka, it was amazing! Not only was it good, but pretty cheap! They pour very freely here, no shot glasses measuring how much alcohol goes into the glass, just pouring until it’s full! I love it!
After dinner, we did some more walking. Everything looked so beautiful lit up a night. It was early evening when we were done with dinner, so things were just starting to light up.
Pantheon
It's massive! It’s amazing how much history there is here. Every step you take it feels historic! I know that sounds dumb, but it’s true! There is so much that has happened here, and you can actually feel it all around you. Every corner you turn, you see another amazing site. It really just blows your mind to be surrounded by so many historic buildings. I mean, these are the things you’ve read about in history books and see on maps…and here I am, walking around and seeing them in person. Walking where the ancient Romans walked…Crazy.
We went out tonight to a few local bars. We were told an area where we’d have fun, but I don’t think we ever made it there. I don’t know who was leading us (I don’t think it was me), but whoever it was sucked! Ha ha! We ended up hitting up a cute little bar (that was empty) for a while. I met a couple of cute boys who were from Spain but lived in Italy (which seemed strange to me). They didn’t speak English, so I busted out my Spanish skills. Seriously, I was using my 2 years of high school Spanish
Trevi
Trevi Fountain in Italy. Go figure! We actually had a decent conversation going, and we all understood each other. Anyway, the Spaniards were ready to leave and come to the next bar with us, but I ended up telling them that we were just going home. It just seemed like too much effort to talk with them…Besides, I was already feeling no pain thanks to my new favorite drink - straight strawberry vodka. We made it to some dive bar that was pretty crowded and had a dance floor. I ended up pointing at some random local, called him out to the dance floor where I danced and made out with him. Did I mention that I was el drunko?!? Wow. I don’t really remember getting home, but I do know that I ended up in a cab with Jesse and James and maybe Lyn? It was a fun night, from what I remember.
What I do know is that all of this drinking is going to kill me!!!
