Con un po' di sole...
Ah! I decided to skip class (it was the first week of class anyway... does it really matter?) to catch the train to Venezia for CARNEVALE!!!!!!! Fat Tuesday/ Mardi Gras/ Martedì Grasso spent in Venezia with every other person -- yep I was there! When we (I went with a bunch of friends from the program) first arrived, we were a bunch of women on a mission (accompanied by some reluctant males)... to find a BEAUTIFUL mask! We started crossing the bridges, Stephanie and I both on the look out for something pink with glitter and feathers. Stopping at each stand, we tried the different masks; finally, we stopped and found the ones that were calling our names... but somehow my ideal pink turned into the usual black... but only because it is much classier 😊 but yes, after we found the masks, we went straight to the next most important item for carnevale... the PASTRIES. We purchases un mucchio/un sacco/a LOT of frittelle and chiacchiere For pics of these dolci . I recommend the chiacchiere -- flaky, thin pastries, almost like crackers, absolutely COVERED in powdered sugar. Sure, of course I wore all black, so yes I had powered sugar all over me, and yes,

we all choked laughing into the pastries. ma sono SQUISITI!!! beh, allora... we could tell that the sun was setting so we set off in search of Piazza San Marco for the sunset; unfortunately (or fortunately) we all got lazy and wanted to really get started on the "Fat" part of the Tuesday... we decided to stop off at a lil' bar. By a stroke of unplanned luck, we were somewhat off the beaten path, so we ended up in a place that wasn't covered in tourists. In contribution to all of the sfortuna, the waitress accidentally split a glass of wine all over the table and a lil' bit on poverino Adam. However, she ended up giving us MORE pastries, and we got great deals on the drinks -- €1.10 per vino e €2.00 per spritz... which is cheaper than Ferrara!! Have I explained the spritz yet?? It is a very common aperitivo of a sparkling white wine and aperol or campari -- a liquor made from bitter herbs, always garnished with a slice of orange. It has become one of my faves! anywho... we started the grand trek to Piazza San Marco to meet up with the rest

of the gang. Once there, everyone was on a quest to find wine. A few of us departed and we eventually discovered a store of sorts lined with barrels of wine. For a cheap price a couple of €Euro€ you could get an emptied liter-sized water bottle filled up with your wine of choice. Classy. The others... purchased €10.00 (and up) bottles of wine (which is a bit absurd considering you can find a good bottle of wine for much cheaper). Nonetheless, everyone was content. At this point, there was a concert going on in Piazza San Marco, which was full of people. First, there was a band that reminded me of the Transiberian Orchestra -- classical instruments but popular songs. This act was followed by a House band, and then finally some reggae-ish guy (I have no idea who...). In the meantime, my Italian friends met up with me, and we got stuck in the middle of the crowd of the piazza. When we finally decided to move out of the crowd, I barely had an inch to move myself. It took us a good 20 or so minutes to finally get past everyone. When we did, we decided

we were hungry so we went in search of a decently-priced sandwich place... in which we found and enjoyed some rather hearty pressed sandwiches... mmm. At this point, it was already nearing midnight so we had to head back to the train station to purchase our tickets and head on home. The return was rather interesting -- just imagine a train full of some rather tipsy people. But we made it home all together and all ok -- although one of the girls had fallen into the grand canal before leaving...(che bella figura...) and smelled, so I hear, absolutely horrible. Imagine that!
