Carnivale in Venezia
*Carnivale is the 2 weeks that lead up to Lent. It includes partying, dancing, music, and masquerades.
Friday morning Rebecca Schiappa, Rosemary Ansel, and I got up really early and took a 6:30 am train to Venice (Venezia); we got into Venice at about 11 am. When we got off the train we saw so many people dressed up in their Carnivale outfits, it was SO cool!! Then we walked across a bridge, to the other side of the canal. We got some sugarcoated almonds and some other Venetian Carnivale treats. We walked around the little side streets shopping and making our way towards Piazza San Marco and the Realto Bridge. On our way there we each picked out masks to wear. When we got to Piazza San Marco Rebecca and paid 1 euro to feed the pigeons!! IT WAS SO MUCH FUN!!! They attacked us hard-core; they were nibbling and scratching us. I never remembered them being so vicious!! While Rebecca and I were feeding the birds we were screaming, and since there weren’t that many other people feeding the birds, people were surrounding us and taking
pictures of us like we were famous. (It was like we were famous or something.) It was so funny!! I decided that after I retire I want to go to Venice and be the lady that sells bird seeds to all the tourists, because she seriously has the best job; she gets to be friends with the birds, she gets to live in Venice (one of my favorite places) and she gets to see people get attacked by birds all day long!! What a great life! hahaha
For lunch we got deep-dish pizza slices for lunch. (It is really rare seeing deep-dish pizza, because pizza here is normally really thin.) They were so good!! Then after that we walked around some more, took lots of pictures. We walked around Piazza San Marco and took pictures with all the people who dressed up for Carnivale. Every outfit was so different from one another, as well as everyone’s personality; it was really interesting how they all not only dressed their part, but also played it. It was also really nice getting to take pictures with all the people for FREE!
For dinner, we went to a little Trattoria, which is
like a family run, local restaurant. I got pizza estiva, which had mozzarella, tomatoes, and corn on it. It was really good. Then we went to Piazza San Marco again, because they were having a concert or something at 8pm. There were like a bunch of people on stage that painted this huge canvas all together to make this really cool painting.
Then there was the main entertainment, which was these people who were acting as the 5 senses (cause this years Carnivale them is called Sensations). Then there were these gymnastic stunt men, who put together this huge scaffolding thing that had trampolines and poles attached to it. They jumped and did flips off the scaffolding; they jumped over and under one another, held themselves up upside down and sideways. They were really talented and entertaining! We really enjoyed watching them.
Then after that there was this creepy man who went on stage and attempted to entertain the crowd but like singing and dancing with the music. (I think that people were more creeped out by him than anything.) lol He passed around some free stuff to the audience, and I got some panties! LOL After that
we got some cappuccinos and walked around a little while longer, cause we were freezing. Then at 10 pm they did the whole show again, but we couldn’t watch it because we had to make our way back to the train station. On our walk back we kept passing by random concerts that were in little piazzas throughout the island. We were freezing, so by then we started speed walking to the train station, which was like a 30 min walk. When we finally got there we had about an hour to wait till our train left (it left at 12:04 am). When it got there we were sad to leave Carnivale, but happy to be in a warm place! (We didn’t get a hotel/hostel, because they were really expensive and we just decided we would rough it and sleep on the train, which was fine with me.)
The train got into Rome at around 7 am, and we then had to take a bus to the center of Rome, so we ended up getting back to the hotel around 7:30 am. We took a nap and then had lunch at 1 pm. After that I went to the
gym, did some reading for philosophy, then got ready to go out. We went to this restaurant in Campo Dei Fiori for dinner, and then we went to this bar that we call Cheap Bar for the rest of the night. I got home about 2 am.
Sunday I woke slept in, went to get a pizzeta (grilled sandwich) for lunch. We wanted to walk around Rome and go shopping, but it was rainy, so we did homework instead. All in all it was a really fun weekend!!!!!!
