I am currently in Sigillo, Italy, where the Hanggliding World Championships take place from the 16th to the 30th of July. I flew to Rome, and there, I got a lift with Joakim and Hakan from the Swedish team, which was great. I still remember what a hassle it was when I caught a train from Rome to Sigillo last year. This year, there are 148 pilots from 35 nations. And the organisers put a lot of effort into the preparations. You can find the whole organising team, actual information, and also the framework programme on the website www.cucco2011.com. I am a jury member this year. This means that, together with my co-jury member Dennis Pagen (USA) and our jury president Flip Koetsier (Netherlands), I have to make sure that the competition is fair and safe. ... read more

I just returned from Monte Cucco, Italy, where the Hanggliding Pre Worlds took place. More info on that, you will find here. I went there to see friends, and I had a great time. But it all started off as chaotic as it could. I caught a plane from Hamburg to Rome on Wednesday afternoon. That plane was delayed, and after finally arriving at Rome airport, I had to wait forever for my suitcase to arrive. So I was pretty sure I would not be able to catch my train from the airport to Roma Termini (Rome Central Station), from where I was supposed to catch a train to Fossato di Vico, which is about 2.5 hours from Rome and not far from Sigillo where the Pre Worlds took place. However, with some running, I made ... read more

HE SAID... We arose early and walked to the train station to leave for Gubbio at 7.15am. We shared a carriage with a bunch of schoolkids going to Bologna and then travelled along the Adriatic Coast to Ancona. Most of the coastline had been manicured within an inch of its life, and the tractor-raked beaches with thousands of deck chairs and umbrellas in perfectly symmetrical lines were far from the wild and untouched beaches I have known all my life. I hate unrestrained coastal development. This was to be our longest train trip so far, arriving at the industrial port of Ancona at 12pm. After a quick stopover at the station, we boarded a second train, backtracked slightly up the Adriatic Coast before heading west into the heart of Umbria, arriving at Fossato di Vico at ... read more

The bus dropped us off at the main Piazza Quaranta Martiri in Gubbio. I had directions on how to get to our hotel. We walked up a very steep, cobblestoned, road that was only wide enough for one small car. We came upon a small store that sold various important sundries and we made our first purchase of wine. Jeff wanted to buy local and so we purchased a couple bottles of red wine grown in the region. They each cost around 3 to 5 euros. We were thrilled. We also purchased some local cheese that had the regions famous black truffles laced throughout. We continued walking up the very steep hill. Jeff was smart, as always, and he only had a daypack with all of his belongings. I had a too large suitcase with wheels, ... read more
