The Via Aurelia was the Roman road connecting Rome and Pisa. The modern highway (Strada stratale 1) between the two cities is called La Via Aurelia today. This is the route our Globus tour bus followed to Pisa on Saturday morning. It is a coastal highway with much to see.
The highway out of Rome turned north near Civitavecchia, the port and cruise terminal for Rome. (Arriving at Leonardo da Vinci, one can see the cruise ships docked here). The first glimpse of the Mediterranean came with a view of the Castello de Santa Severa, a 14th century coastal stronghold that came under the Order of the Holy Ghost in 1482. It is a museum today. North of Civitavecchio an on top of a hill was Tarquinia an old city dating to Etruscan times,
A morning break was had at Ristorante Vecchia Maremma in Orbetello. The restaurant had a number of black and white photo of Italian village life in the 1950s. It was interesting contrast the immediate postwar era, when life was still rough, with the present. We were now officially in Tuscany and the highway was lined with olive oil farms..
Passing Piombino, the island of
Elba was visible through the mist on the horizon. It's the place where Napoleon was exiled in 1814-1815.
We arrived in Pisa about 12:30.
