The clouds which had started to form yesterday had firmly camped over Aprica by the time we woke up. We had our breakfast and headed off to the slopes in the hope that during the climb up we would rise above them. This did not happen and the cloud was still present 900 metres above the town. We decided to try the run we enjoyed the previous morning but the visibility was down to a few metres in places and the wide open slope at the other end of the run was completely in white out conditions. We ran down the slope by following the markers at the edge of the run.
We skied back to the top station of the middle gondola as this area had trees and they help visibility in white out conditions. We then spent most of the day riding a chair lift up the mountain and skiing back to the bottom of this lift, as it had some clear patches on the runs for some of the time. We had regular breaks in the restaurant at the bottom of this chair lift and we discovered that they sold whole pizzas for 7 Euros. Certainly the
food prices up the mountain are reasonable and have surprised us as we have been used to the higher restaurants charging a lot because they could.
The cloud remained into the afternoon and after an exploratory trip towards the run we tried at the start of the day we headed back to the top of the gondola station. Ruth went down the hill in the gondola and JJ and I skied to the town. We reached the hotel and then met Ruth as she walked back from the gondola base station. Having gone with Ruth to the hotel JJ and I went for one last run. We went from the town in the gondola, changed to the chair lift and at the top of the hill the button lift was working for the first time in the day, so we went up it!
For the first time in the day we broke through the cloud as we reached the highest point in the resort, so the cloud was nearly to 2300 metres.
The top slopes back down were great as they had been hardly used during the day so we set off. After a descent of a
couple of hundred metres we were back in cloud and it slowly built up until, somewhere near mid mountain, the visibility was the worst of the day. I could see only a few metres ahead and JJ lost me if he let me get more than 5 metres ahead. At this point I was skiing by feel only and trying to work out where I was on the hill using sounds. Not the best way forward.
The visibility improved enough by the top of the gondola station for us to take the correct route home and we skied back to the town. At the bottom of this run we had to turn off the run and head across powder snow to finish close to the hotel; great fun even in the white out conditions.
Then it was back to the hotel to rest and get ready for hopefully better conditions tomorrow.
