Yesterday was the travelling day. We stayed near Heathrow overnight so it only took a few minutes to get to the terminal. The trip through to Milan was easy and we collected our baggage and headed for the espresso machine in the arrivals area. We were delayed leaving the airport as some of the party we were travelling with had lost their luggage so we did not get to the hotel until after 6pm. Then it was a rush to get the ski equipment for JJ before dinner and bed.
The morning came with sunshine and a light dusting of snow and the mountains dominated the view from the bedroom window. The ski lifts opened at 8.30 and we were on the slopes, all breakfasted, by 9.00. The nearest lift is behind the hotel opposite so we did a few runs on this lift before heading to the nearest gondola and up to the top of the mountain. Aprica has three main lift lines up to the peaks and having reached the top of the middle one we headed off to the most easterly on a very relaxing blue.
Once we had reached this easterly area we spent most
of the morning circling a rolling blue run by the side of a chair lift. In the sunshine this was a great way to get our ski legs back. We stopped for a drink break and discovered the hot chocolate drink which tasted like neat melted chocolate, and I think will be a favourite of the holiday.
Then we skied from the eastern end of the resort all the way to the western end and ended up at the bottom of the western chair lift. Now it was lunch time as we enjoyed another drink and cheese and ham Panini, sitting in the sunshine watching the world go by.
In the afternoon we skied this western end; there was a blue run from the top of the mountain all the way back to the town so we took this run a few times. However, we are used to the Swiss piste markings where the regular markers show the difficulty of the run; from blue at the easiest through red to black as the hardest. We followed one of these ‘blue’ runs just before lunch and it seemed a bit steep. We later worked out that all the piste
poles are blue and only the less frequent run identifiers show the run colour. The run we had mistaken was actually a black run but it was a gentle introduction to black runs as it seemed like a red when we actually did it.
After a couple of runs from top to bottom we were starting to feel weary and the cloud was building. Ruth took a break at the top of the mountain for one run and JJ and I took the black run which ran from near the top to near the town. It was a fun run and a bit thin on the snow cover at times.
We met up with Ruth for the last run of the day and came all the way down the mountain to very near the hotel. It was then off with the skis and a short walk back. As the weather had not yet closed in we headed off to the town to see what was there and pick up a few essentials before settling down for the evening.
