I freaked out a little, hoping that no major issues would come up today on my way to catch my flight in Milan at 4pm. So, I woke up super early and caught the 5:46am train from Riomaggiore that would take me to Genova. I had studied the train schedule we had take a picture of in La Spezia until I felt comfortable with my plan. However, because it was so early, the ticket station was not open and a couple of Austrailian guys waiting across the tracks told me how to get over there. When I got on the almost empty train, I chose my window seat and waited to explain to the conductor. A conductor never appeared. Cool! Unfortunately, because it was such an early hour, I didn't get to see all the incredible ... read more

After 34 hours of total traveling time...we have arrived in Milan a city where even the coke tins are tall and skinny. We staggered out of the airport and tackled our first attempt at communicating with the locals where it became apparent I should have studied some Italian!!! However, the Italian man quickly adapted to our technology ways and read the address of our hotel off our iPhone. Problem sorted. At least he didn't lock the doors as expienced in my last big adventure overseas to Peru. He did make full use of the autobahn set your own speed limit rule and hurtled along at 140+ most of the way to Marcus' delight. Having freshened up, we headed out to check out our surrounds. More encounters with the locals, my first ristreto a traditional pizza and ... read more

I got to the hotel and the rest of that night was fine. The next morning not so much. So, the hotle wasn't near really anything. I asked the hotel staff where the nearest bus station was, I walked forever to find the bus station, couldn't find it so I ended up going into a super market and asked some girls who were working where the nearest one was. I was no where near the one the hotel told me about, and the girls said it was to hard to explain where the nearest one was, so they offered to drive me there. I hoppped in there car and they dropped me off at the statio. I needed to go to Milan before I went to Monza because I realized that I didn't have anywhere to ... read more

I arrive in Milan eager to achieve the agenda I have set forth for this city. I have a couple of very important things I wish to accomplish while here. I want to visit and view the painting of The Last Supper which was painted by Leonardo Da Vinci, and I want to tour the Duomo di Milano. I make my way from the train station to try to find the hostel that I have booked. As it always seems, I get a little crossed up with the directions, but after a fifteen minute or so walk (the directions say short walk - I suppose this is short), I find the hostel. Of course I was early, and after a pretty long wait to check in, I was told that I couldn't go to my room ... read more

Early starts are not really our thing, especially Harriet, but Milan was her idea. We left at about 5.30am for a 4 1/2 hour drive. The sun wasn't even up and there was hardly any traffic. Harriet wanted to go to Milan for the shopping. Toby and Fiona agreed because they wanted to see the cathedral and Leonardo Da Vincis painting ofthe Last Supper. We decided to combine it with a trip to Venice and to stay overnight in Milan coming back to Montone tomorrow evening. Finding the hotel was a little challenging, but we eventually got there. We were lucky that they let us check in at 10 in the morning and we had somewhere to leave the car. The hotel was on the outskirts of Milan so that we didn't have to drive in ... read more

Milan was simply an entry point. It just happened to be the closest city to Trieste into which Icelandair flies. Before I landed I had, I must admit, little intrinsic interest in seeing Milan. In my head it was associated with snobbish fashionista types – so very unlike me. Of course, I knew there were sights to be seen, just as in any Italian city. Indeed, Italy seems to have a surfeit outstanding urban centers to explore; it can be overwhelming just to think about it. But Milan wasn’t high on my list of Italian urban centers to see. I should have known, then, that it would surprise me. By this point in my traveling career, I know, if not always put into practice, that I should not approach a new place with preconceived notions of ... read more

Milan and Verona My last breakie with Danni at Riomaggiore was had at our favourite bar centrale, where by now I am almost a local! Haha we caught the train to La Spezia, waited an hour for our next train and then blogges for the two and a half hpur trip to Milan. The only eventful thing that happened was my trip to the train toilet. The first one was "full" ewwwww, the second was pretty awful (like I would need a bucket of disinfectant to wash myself in after just looking at it) and when I lift the lid of the toilet I could see the train rails sweeping past through the hole of the toilet which didn't flush, it just emptied onto the tracks....I was shocked, and very grossed out at the lack of ... read more

July 12: Wow! Last night made the night of fire alarms at the Heathrow (so called) comfort Inn seem like paradise. My stomach cramps came back with a fury! They'd get worse and worse till eventually I'd be woken by them and have to go and do... something unpleasant toilet-wise. Then at one point when I was well asleep (no easy task with people partying loudly through the night, even to the point where the rubbish trucks and street sweepers had started up) I got a phone call at about 4am from the NZ blood service asking if I was free to donate plasma... obviously not their fault because (a) they didn't know I was on the other side of the world and (b) I do usually turn my phone off at night, but still grrr. ... read more

It has been a few days since I have written in this bad boy. There is reason for that. What I want to do is write stories to entertain, not the boring play-by-plays of every little thing that I have done abroad. If you want something like that, you can go buy a Fodor's, Rick Steve's, or Lonely Planet travel book. I want to give you something unique. Over the past week and a half, I have been to Amsterdam, Brussels, Nice, and Milan. Now I am relaxing on the beautiful shores of Lake Como. Everyday has been an adventure that's for sure. But stories don't always come along with adventures, no matter how different they are. Amsterdam-whatever you have heard about Amsterdam...that was my trip (plus an amazing bike ride out into the country side ... read more
