It would have been easier to just stay on the beach and finish with a lazy meal on the strip. However I've never been a big fan of easy, and I was dying to do the big walk to Vernazza although all the reports we'd heard were a little scary. One family told of coming across a mother and her pre-teen daughter crying on the trail - the child because her feet were a mess from walking in thongs, and her mother from having to literally push her crippled daughter up the hundreds and hundreds of stairs because they were in the no-mans land of half-way between towns! Again, we decided an evening walk would be the go, and we did have a lovely day on the beach. Isabel settled for trying the Monterosso jumping rock ... read more

We woke to glorious sunshine and felt energized to attempt the more difficult section of the Cinque Terre trail between Vernazza and Monterossa, the northern most town. Although shorter in length than yesterday's hikes, it was a steeper and longer climb up to and down from the trail at each end. Breath-taking views abounded that our photos don't do justice to. The clear blue skies intensified the color of the water and the coastline just popped. And wow, was it crowded! This is supposed to be the off-season, people--why are you all here??? Nothing could take away from the spectacular scenery, however. We thoroughly enjoyed this hike, and I was thrilled that despite my lingering cold (and resulting lack of sleep), I dominated all those "stairs" on the trail. We enjoyed meandering through Monterossa, which is ... read more

We were awoken in the middle of the night by a loud crash, followed by an unidentifiable eerie howling noise. Puzzled, I quickly stuck my head out the door and was nearly blown back into the room. We were in the midst of a roaring windstorm that had not only knocked over the furniture on our rooftop deck, but was rushing through the train tunnel below us creating the weirdest noise--a louder version of the sound you get from blowing into a bottle. Once we figured out what was happening, we returned to sleep, but the wind didn't let up and was pretty consistent throughout the next day. Nonetheless, we didn't let us stop us from our plan to hike part of the coastal trail that links the five towns, and is not only a national ... read more

We were awoken in the very early morning by an intense thunder and lightening storm. Eventually we gave up on sleep, got busy packing, then caught the late morning train to Vernazza in the Cinque Terre area along the coast of Italy. The skies were clearing when we arrived in the mid-afternoon, and we found the enoteca where we were to meet Giuliano of "Camere Giuliano", our home for the next few days. He helped us carry our bags--good thing since it was all uphill and up lots of stairs to reach his 4 rooms carved out of the terraces that rise above the town--and we settled into our room. Next on the agenda was to buy some wine, bread and pesto (that the area is known for) to enjoy on our rooftop deck, with its ... read more

It is difficult to describe this place. Beautiful, picturesque, amazing do not give this region justice when trying to describe. We enjoyed great wines, food and views of the 5 villages. We spent the day hiking to each one and enjoying great appetizers and a bottle of wine at each stop. We loved it!... read more

Going South Ciao Paisanos (Hello Friends), I last left you on my train ride from Zurich, Switzerland to Lake Como where George Clooney has his Italian villa. We dreamed of basking in the Italian sun with George and friends while working on a golden tan. The Alps have strings of emerald lakes that work their way up the valleys and give a nice backdrop to the rising mountains. Geneva has Lake Geneva, Zurich has Lake Zurich and Como has Lake Como. We hoped Como would give us a chance to eat Italian food and enjoy the warm rich pleasures of the Italian lakes. We'd gotten tired of the rain and clouds of Zurich and were looking for some sun. When the train burst into the southern side of the Alps after a long tunnel, the sun ... read more

Prawdopodobnie najbardziej znanymi atrakcjami Ligurii sa Portofino, gdzie Rod Stewart z kolejnymi zonami pije jablkowe martini w porcie i 5Terre, kolonia pieciu miasteczek (Riomaggiore, Corniglia, Vernazza, Monterosso, Manarola) wpisanych na liste Unesco. Bylo ich widac na kazdym kroku, mowiacych co krok 'Oh my God, this is amazing'. We have spent a week in Nice, in the nicest apartment we have stayed all throughout Europe. It's not the largest, but the kitchen is stocked with cooking supplies and it is definitely the cleanest and most decorated, which are all things I love. We cooked mussels tonight, and they were delicious. As we head into Italy tomorrow, it is natural that I feel the gradual approach of the end of our Europe Adventure. We have only 2 countries to go, and only 25% of our trip. I am going to miss speaking French. My vocabulary has grown and developed with more conversations and listening experiences. We have mastered the French train system and lived through the train strike. I have had my fair share of pain au chocolat One thing I am going to miss ... read more
