We ended up catching a later train than the 6.30am one we had originally planned to take to Rome - instead we caught one at about 9.30 and got into Rome in about an hour.
It was quite a long way to our hotel, and expensive in a taxi, but still a much better option that trying to figure out how the public transport system here works with all of our bags with us. This ended up being a very good choice as you have to catch at least one train, a bus, and then walk a little way to get to our hotel, and since we didn't know which train or which bus we had to catch it would have just ended in disaster.
So we got to our hotel and were quite dismayed to see just how far out of the city it actually is, but (hopefully) we are saving a lot of money by staying this far out - and worse comes to worse, we have learned for next time (when we will feel more confident doing all our own bookings) what to look for location-wise in a hotel.
We got all our luggage up to
the room and set out to explore Rome, and find some food! We had missed breakfast and lunch and were quite hungry!
So we asked at reception and found out how to get into the city, and walked up the hill to the bus stop.
From the bus stop we went to a train station, and caught a train to a station called 'Pyramide' which actually has a Pyramid outside it. What is a pyramid doing in Rome?
We couldn't actually find any food here, so we caught another bus further into the city and found a street lined with restaurants and finally sat down to a very late lunch. By the time we finished lunch it was about 4pm, so we started walking towards the Pantheon. We got there as it started to rain, and made our way inside. It was so crowded with people, and even just getting inside was a bit of an effort, but it was beautiful inside, and very interesting seeing the different statues and artwork. The inside of the building was beautiful, and the outside shape doesn't make much sense when you are inside. It looks like a huge rectangle from the outside, but
inside it feels circular. Probably just because of the ceiling.
By now it was raining more heavily, and we were both very tired even from the very short journey to Rome, so we caught another bus to a train station, caught two trains, and then tried to catch a bus back to our hotel, but couldn't find anywhere that we could do this, so we just walked instead. It was about a twenty minute walk, so we played some music and that cheered us up immensely.
We didn't even end up eating dinner, we just watched some dvds and tried to relax for a while before going to bed.
Funniest moment of the day: when we got to the hotel in the morning, Danny was being silly and decided to jump on his bed, not realising how badly made they are - he jumped up, came down, and crashed through the bed. It was so hilarious that even though we were freaking out thinking that we would have to pay for a new bed, we could not stop laughing. They are just made of these very bent slats in the bed frame and he had
bent them so far that two of them had come out completely. Luckily he was able to put them back in, but this should also highlight just how terrible the beds here are. We are looking forward to staying at Dad and Emma's where the beds are a trillion times better than this!

Arriverderci Roma
It has been wonderful reading your blogs during your travels. We feel like we have travelled with you vicariously and look forward to hearing many more stories. The pyramid in Rome dates back to the Roman Empire and there are in fact many other Egyptian things scattered around Rome. Egypt was part of the Roman Empire and they kind of got fascinated by Egyptology for a while in Rome. Isn't that a pip! I am sure the Colosseum will amaze you when you see it and the catacombs will fascinate you. And don't forget the Sistine Chapel at the Vatican. It is brilliant. Then it will be arriverderci Roma and a long flight home. See you in the morning.
