On day 31 we got up with the intention of visiting a church where we could climb the dome.
As we were walking through the streets of Florence, Danny was saying that he would really like to see some things done by Da Vinci, and I took a few more steps, turned to my right, looked at a shop, and it was a Da Vinci museum. Perfect! So we went inside and Danny had lots of fun looking at and playing with different inventions and learning more about his hero. We watched a dvd about Da Vinci's life for ages - I think we were both a bit tired, and it was actually interesting, so we just sat and watched it for about a half hour before we remembered that we had a lot to do and should get going.
So we went to what we thought was the right church, bought a ticket, and started walking around. It wasn't until we came out of the first part of the exhibition inside the church that we saw the actual dome over on another church and realised we had gone to the wrong one! So we just kept looking around that
one. It had a book museum in it - which was actually not that interesting, even to me! So I whispered, "Are you as bored as I am?" And Danny said, "Moreso." (Dad will get that - and we actually did say it too) and we left.
We found some lunch and then had a huge gelato - mine was meringue flavour, which was wonderful! I want to take back buckets and buckets of it!
We ate our gelato as we walked to the train station and waited for a train to Pisa, which took about an hour to get there. We walked through Pisa and found the leaning tower. And yes, it really does lean. A lot. And I went up it.
We bought our tickets to go up the tower - which they have an excellent system for - they show you the times available and you buy for a certain time slot. They keep track of how many tickets are left for each time on a screen, so if it is really busy then you at least know what time you are going up and can go do something else and come back at
a guaranteed time.
We took a lot of silly photos with Manford and the tower to pass the time until it was our turn to climb up, and then we began to climb the tower. It was quite scary! The lean did not do much to appease my fear of heights, and I was very freaked out, especially as the stairs are marble and very worn down - therefore very slippery - and I was having these images of me falling down the entire staircase.
We made it to the top, where I was possibly even more frightened, but determined to take photos. I almost dropped Manford, and that freaked me out even more - I was shaking for ages afterwards! And I know he would have been fine... but Manford could have fallen! It was very scary. The way down was not as scary, mainly because I was happy about the idea of getting back on the ground and not being inside a tower I was convinced was going to fall the rest of the way over with me inside of it.
We spent a little while shopping at the markets, but didn't buy much as I
have finished all my present shopping and the excitement about buying cool things for people is pretty much gone (unless I find something really cool!)
We caught another train back to Florence, had some dinner and packed ready to go to ROME!!
