We did our 2nd Tour with "Through Eternity" which was of the Colosseum & Forum with our very informative guide Jennifer. We loved the Colosseum and D even had his picture taken with a Roman Centurian (corny).
After we were finished the tour we decided to wander around....found a spot to have lunch and then off we went again....and got lost...quite a few times. Which worked out wonderfully as we kept stumbling across unexpected bonus finds : )) Found out time and again that the sites that look so far from each other on the map -are VERY close to each other and extremely walkable.
Later that evening we did our final tour called the "Rome by Twilight" with our guide Ian (from Ireland). He showed us where to find the best espresso....very smooth! I wish I'd brought more bags back with me -all gone now : ( which was at the Piazza Sant Eustachio: www.santeustachioilcaffe.it
best gelato (San Crispino) on the way from the Spanish Steps to the Trevi fountain. I had a delicious rum & chocolate/vanilla bourbon cup and cutie had the whiskey/licorice root cup. Yummers.
During the tour we had spotted a restaurant in the Piazza S Ignazio which we wanted to go back and try out if it was still open....it had been very crowded and looked very attractive...plus the majority of tables appeared to be outside spilling out into the square. It looked perfect!!! Luck was on our side as it was still open as late as it was when we finished : ) We sat at our table and absorbed the wonderful atmosphere around us. No one spoke English and we don't speak Italian but it always seemed to work out regardless no matter where we went during our holiday. We were brought a complimentary appetizer of Pollenta & Bruchetta-I ordered the chef specialty of Curry Chicken, and D ordered a pizza with egg/bacon/mushroom/and artichoke. I almost fell out of my chair laughing when they brought it and set it in front of him. We were expecting the pizza to look like any other pizza we'd ever had, but each topping was in it's own separate quatrant...with the egg staring at him in the middle-the look on his face was priceless. Yup, mine was better : P We then filled up on dinner, a bottle of wine, and of course had to finish with espresso and a strawberry flambe dessert (we were also given complimentary tea biscuits which were so good we even ate those! Yummm-fluffy with lots of flavour). check it out: www.dasabatino.it
We then continued on back in the general direction of the Piazza Navona and window shopped and stopped and had a break in front of the Pantheon and people watched for awhile. The Pantheon was closed as it was late by then so we promised ourselves we'd be back the next day to see inside. What a wonderful day...we wandered back to the hotel in a state of contentment. Bliss.
