RJ loving it!
Ahhhh....Roma, "The Eternal City". We finally get even with Rome. What a beautiful city. It seems everywhere in Rome there are sacred ruins that can be found strewn everywhere. RJ really loves this city, says he want to go to school there. Yesterday, as Yvonne previously mentioned, we got to the Coliseum in the early evening after the last tour had long since finished and it seemed like we had the place to our selves, with a few vendors still left on the grounds packing up their wares for the day. It is hard to explain this stucture, one of The Seven Wonders of the World, it really can take your breath away. The shere size of it, is magnificent. You cannot help but imagine the sound of 50,000 Romans cheering events that took place here centuries ago. Tonight we were only able to walk around the outside but took some spectacular pictures. We took a taxi to the Trevi Fountain which is unlike anything we would ever see in the U.S. It was a balmy night and people, hundreds of them, were just standing around and admiring this small marbled miracle. It is built where three (trevi) streets come together,

that once were aqueducts, that once supplied ancient Rome with part of its water supply. From there we took a cab to the Spanish Steps which was another beautiful site to see, especially at night. The temperature at night is significantly cooler than during the day which allowed me to climb all 136 steps (RJ counted them) to the top. I don't think I could have done this during the day with the heat. I was telling the others that during WWII, Germany declared Rome and "open city" and evacuated their troops as the allies marched toward the city. It was of political importance for our American soldiers to arrive in Rome before the British so as to claim the conquest of Rome on behalf of the USA! As the American GI's made there way into the city they were exhausted and hungry. 100's of them just dropped their gear and slept right there on the steps, finding comfort from the warmth of the sun beaten steps to their liking.
